Just a word of warning, it seems that there’s something on ebay that’s doggy. I got it sat night and by looking on the net it seems like its widespread with people reporting it everywhere.
Keep everything Anti-virus up to date. London stock exchange has been hit with it by the looks of it as well.
That said my Antivirus was up to date and it still got through.

    Had it too.

It’s a script error that google chrome (for example) interprets as being linked to a dodgy site known for malware.

The sites themselves haven’t been infected – it’s just a glitch.

I had a bad root kit virus my son picked up from a youtube like site.
It kept reinstalling itself upon starting up, it was misery.
I switched to Chrome and did the whole fixer-upper sequence from Major Geeks
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407
It really worked and I suck at anything computery.
    Just be careful.
    Love…..Jill

Yes i was using IE8…….must switch i think??
It was genuine enough and was a right pain to remove. Probably came from an advert banner on eBay trying to direct automatically to another site where the malware/ virus was. Mcafee site advisor went red and before i knew what was going off it was on my PC…….all automatically whilst on EBay.

more to do with google ads than any particular site.

took out my work tower today 🙁

something along the lines of "system tool", i’d had a few high risk warnings over previous days and this am it decided to run, basically from the task tray it popped up with a ‘serious risk’ warning and to "update spyware now’, I wasn;t sure of it so clicked the box to close it, it instantly downloaded and installed something before i could shut the wireless off – once i’d realised it wasn’t right.

i tried to run spybot, avg and cc cleaner, nothing worked, anything .exe was screwed which meant no easy fix.

phoned my pal at the pc shop and he’d already had 7 pc’s in with the same prob that morning, it was even testing their virus kit! i’ll get the tower back in the morning but it’s seriously messed up my next few days as this lappy isn’t compatible with winplot (windows 7) that runs my cutter.

if you get anything that looks like a system warning about AV or spyware then immediately run your anti virus and spyware stuff, do not even try to close it. once clicked it installed and was trying to get me to upgrade to their super duper $70 – 150 protection.

I have always managed to avoid this sort of stuff but damned certain it’s something to do with these ad warnings, some of the warnings were for trojans, too much of a coincidence. i don’t ever open emails if not safe looking either.

    gutted!

ps, was using firefox and IE (for my hotmail accounts) side by side.

free avg picked up the attacks. spyware even popped up a warning. somehow it got through.

the tower is xp pro, this laptop is Windows7, perhaps 7 is more secure?

I’ve long suspected that all the viruses are written by the anti virus companies.

What better way is there to force people to continuously upgrade then by having a problem that continuously evolves.

It’s a bit like the tobacco companies getting people to become addicted to nicotine – then keep on selling the antidote (i.e nicotine 😕 ).

if you ask me – anti virus software should be banned – then (in time) all the new viruses would disappear.

Control Panel, Programs, Programs & features,
Uninstall or change, turn windows features on or off,

    – Un-tick Internet Explorer 8 –

    SHOULD work….

    Thanks Dave.

Just waiting for an updated spybot to finish and I’ll switch it off then.

    Cheers

    Hugh

spybot only found a couple of adthingies. turned of IE as you suggested and bingo. whole lappy is faster without it to, for some reason!

Well if its ie, then you may as well just throw in the towel, and buy a mac.

My old Gran thought you could catch a cold by getting wet…

    hi Peter,

IE is only the web side of Windows explorer, it’s that which usually causes the probs. I recently got into the habit of using IE again as hotmail (linked accounts) was messing about when switching tween accounts, normally I use only firefox. inevitably when the kids went on the pc / laptop they’d be using facebook, checking their forum stuff, emails and using sites heavy with google ads, they nearly always use IE…. no more they will!

having two browsers is useful when you have more than one account on one site, such as hotmail, ebay, etc.

anyways, hopefully get the tower back this am, can’t cut til i do!

IE such a pain in the arse… regardless which version it is…

Firefox and Chrome are targeted as well but not as much as IE
