Magnetic Signs
Posted by John Gregson on May 18, 2007 at 11:37 amHi All,
I’ve been asked to produce some magnetics for an estate car and am wondering where the best place is to buy the material per metre not a full roll. Could you also supply some info on the best thickness to use and also is it possible to round off the corners by hand.Cheers John

Only use the 0.85 thick stuff on vehicles. The thinner stuff is for fridge magnets and the like.

Thanks for your advice, I’ve quoted on vinyl straight onto the car and will get prices for the magnetic to offer him as well.

John, just a couple of points, explain to your customer that you only use vehicle grade magnetic (some people sell them cheap on display grade), always give your customer a magnetic care guide and explain the potential problems.
As for the job itself, if the guy brings the car to you at any point test the areas where the magnetics will go just to check for any form of filler, I had a guy with a pretty new car complaining that the magnetic kept falling off one side a few years ago, when I investigated the door had been repaired and it was the filler stopping the magnetic from sticking properly. The customer didn’t even know about the repair so I always check if I can. Also there are the models that have ally and fibreglass doors and bodys, tailgates are quite often fibreglass or plastic so always best to check if you can.

We supplied magnetic panels for a tanker lorry and although they stuck really well they fell off overnight 😕 . We checked with volvo and could not find any reason for this, ended up giving him vinyl instead.

Thanks for all the info – never thought about repaired cars and magnetics Martin and that’s a good pointer to look out for in the future.
Cheers John
