    hi guys and gals,

i am on the lookout for a wide format printer/cutter and have seen one at auction, now i know that buying a machine at auction is always a big gamble. so i was wondering what a ball park figure is to have a machine refurbished/fully serviced?

depending on the price of this i can then work out whether to take a gamble on getting one at auction if the price is cheap enough and have enough left over to refurbish the machine.

the machine in question is an SP 540v

any help would be greatly appreciated 🙂

Guess at minimum £300 for a service guy to turn up and change the dampers and other small parts…

£1500 to £2k to turn up, spend a day fitting a couple of heads, dampers, capping stations, encoder strip, pipes, pumps etc…a full rework of all parts.

If it ain’t working you need to get it for next to nothing as auctions carry NO warranty.

thanks for the reply David, are those guide prices incl parts or is that just the labour costs? as i know the heads etc are pretty expensive

Our tech charges us £200 to turn up on the doorstep – paid up front, then £50 an hour plus parts.

To give you an idea, our last bill was about £700 for 8 dampers, a head cable (that had shorted out) and a tiny PCB fuse – also a realignment of all heads to return the machine to perfect order…about 3 hours work.
Quality dampers run at about £15-£20 each, capping stations a bit more…heads in the region of £400 each on a good day plus installation. The 540 has a pair.

Ask to see it running before parting with any cash.

thanks David, so say around the £2000 mark then for a ball park figure of getting the machine fully functioning with what needs doing to it. so how much would you think is worth paying for the machine without the work done? i dont really know what these fetch second hand as ive never really looked for one.

it may not need much being done to but the guy running the auction doesnt know much about it so im sceptical of the condition

Will second the Andy Malcom recommendation. Top bloke who always gets you out of trouble & will only replace what’s needed.

    thanks guys!
sounds like a good guy to know! shame its quite late and wouldnt like to disturb him at this time, or is he an active member on here? if sou could somebody direct him to this thread for me? 🙂

if i won the auction total spend on the machine could be between £3k and £3.5k thought that was an okay price but if these machines dont fetch that much then maybe not. but then again id be safe in the knowledge that the machine is fully functioning 🙂

Be worth talking to Andy before bidding. There’s every chance he knows of somebody upgrading their kit & he’ll know the condition of the stuff they’re selling.
Got 3 sp540s myself, great machines. You’ll love it.

I still feel uncomfortable when any of my lads take the covers off.
There’s nothing like a repair bill that you have to pay yourself to make you take care of a machine!

i missed out on that machine as bidding went stupidly high for a machine with no details or background info or proof of it working. so left it alone. Andy’s on the lookout for me for a used machine 🙂 if anybody else knows of any for sale let me know 🙂

If you give a call to Harry at Eddie Mathias, he’s sure to have something suitable for good money

That sounds about the right sort of pricing but obviously, it depends what’s wrong with it. My customers always get free telephone support though which can often prove very useful.
