looking for boat vinyl, reccomendations please?
Posted by John Stevenson on June 28, 2006 at 8:42 pmCan anybody tell me what sort of Vinyl would be best to use on the hull of a boat?
Also, we recently fitted some vinyl to Roller Blinds but it’s starting to come away. Is there a higher tack version for uses such as this?
Regards

I’ve always used high-performance vinyl for boat lettering.
Well, unless I’m hand-painting it.
Not a lot of call for it round these parts!

For the boat hull, so long as it’s not submerged a good quality cast vinyl works great. Mainly the lifespan is in the surface preparation & condition. Sometimes people seal it in with yacht varnish for added protection.
re: the roller blinds – nothing will stick to them for any length of time. Even highly flexible banner vinyls (on glossy blinds) won’t last.
Two solutions I use for fabric blinds – digitally printed canvas materials or vinyl mask & spray the text / logo & remove the vinyl.
I did a little note about what I do here

I’ve made dozens of them without any issues.Hope it helps a little bit.

John3M 7725 is the only vinyl with a marine warrant as far as I know. Oracal have some clauses in their warranty relating to distance from the waters edge.
3M have no issues as far as I know, but the warranty is pretty much in their favour and they can void it for many reasons. That said, I think any specialists boat signies here will use 3M exclusively if it is to be warranted.
Never done a roller blind, but daves advise is from experience, so I’d suggest it would be best to follow it 😉

Hi,
I use any good quality cast vinyl. However, in my opinion its not possible to guarantee beyond 4-5 yrs regardless of what the manufacturers say about their vinyl.Just make sure the hull, cabin area, waterline and transom are free from grease, salt, wax and sun tan oil !
I’ve found that where graphics have been varnished over, it tends to make them go a little yellow after a time.
The only time we varnish is when applying to wooden hulls, and then we use the thinnest cast vinyl we can get.
I hope this helps.
Cheers,
Cheryl 🙂 -
We used Avery 900 on a Cigarette-speedboat. Hope that works out!
