  • Looking for advice on signwriting onto a barge

Posted by Liam Pattison on August 27, 2009 at 8:12 pm

    Hi there
a customer has asked me to signwrite their barge. I have never really dealt with traditional signwriting before.

So i was wondering is there a way to do it using low tac (removable) vinyl stencils, or would it just end up as a total mess.

Maybe i should just leave this to traditional signwriters?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Liam

You can cut paint mask on your plotter, I use Oramask, then paint it with lettering enamel.
The mask must be removed right away.
The only thing is, it looks like vinyl lettering (to me)
You can also hand-outline the painted lettering with paint to make it look less "stickery".
If you can find a traditional sign writer in your neighborhood I would refer the job to them.
Or get me a plane ticket, I’d do it for free.

Tell him you can do it and sub it out. That way you don’t lose face and the customer’s happy! 😉

    Hello,
    thanks all for your advice.

I think the job has to be pretty traditional, can anyone point me in the direction of any pics on here that have been done in this way. I did try to find some but failed.

I am based in Bedford Lynn, the job is in Northampton.

    Cheers

Liam take a walk along the canal with your camera then you can get a feel of what you need you should see plenty of narrow boats this weekend, or ask your customer what he has in mind.

Thanks Lynn, i should have explained myself better, what i meant to say was are there any pictures of lettering that has specifically been produced by this adapted method of signwriting with vinyl templates.

    Thanks

If you get stuck, I can recommend a traditional signwriter in Northampton.
He’s done narrowboats before at Stoke Bruerne (for Jill) just round the
    corner from our unit.

Here’s some pix from Stoke Bruneueneuene.

Like I said, fly me over, charge the guy, and I will do it for one fish & chips.

I’ll do it for just chips and I’m already in the country, well Wales.

Me thinks we have a bidding war going on :lol1:

Perhaps you could throw in a beer 😉

Really just for fish & chips and I don’t even have to have the chips.
I am still very rudimentary at the roses but I can hand-letter OK.

    OK, I’ll do for just beer…………….. :lol1:

Jill, the Roses get easier the more you drink, seriously tho, look out for the book ‘Roses & Castles’, great for canal art.

    Already have it.
    😉
I picked up another one at Stoke Brueneuene too.
(I know you kind of pronounce it like bruin, speaking of which, I was on an estimate today here: http://www.gatewaylodge.com/ about 1½ hours away, and two young black bears crossed the road right in front of me!)

Thought you probably would. I think it’s spelled ‘Bruerne’.

What kinda sign you doing at the Gateway, did you ‘freak’ at the bears crossing 😮

Whoops, didn’t mean to hijack the thread.

    Jamie,
please could you PM me the contact details of the signwriter you mentioned, i might pass them on to the customer if i decide not to do this, which is most likely.

    Thanks
