  • Looking for advice on printing small runs of small stickers

Posted by Liam Pattison on September 25, 2012 at 3:43 pm

    Hi
Hi, i’m thinking of buying a printer, was looking at the Roland BN 20 to begin with to get me into digital printing.

One of the products i often get asked for is stickers. Smallish stickers of 4” x 4” for example in quantities of anything from 50 to a couple of hundred.

I know the BN 20 would work ok for this and contour cut the stickers i have printed.

So if i get an odd shaped sticker or even a round sticker how do i then trim these to size to seperate them from the sheet, or do most people just cut them down to squares, so that you’d have a boarder all around the edge?

I have seen die cutting machines, but that looks a bit too big for me to begin with.

Are there any other options? Can anyone give me any advice on how they trim the printed sheets down?

    Thank you

    Liam

Woah, i didn’t know about this Cheryl, thanks. I am constantly getting persuaded more and more to go for a bigger printer, when i see the limitations of the smaller one, i was only looking at it really because of space. But i might look at a second user versacam and move some stuff out of the way.

i normally supply approx A4 size sheets with as many stickers on it that fit
if they are required individually cut out then a extra charge applicable.
the perf cut feature is handy for the odd occasion but a bit slow and i think hard on the cutter for continued use.
round stickers supplied on a square back unless requested to be cut out.

we use a flat bed cutter for full cut out odd shape stuff

    Hiya,
The BN20 will PerfCut but it isn’t really advisable, it’s a lot slower on the BN20 to do this than the VersaCAMM ranges.
I agree with Chris, easiest and quickest for yourself to supply a larger sheet with multiple stickers on.
The PerfCut option is great for small runs but will wear the blade quicker and takes a little perfecting to get the forces right.
I guess most customers won’t mind if the sticker comes with a surrounding border as they can peel and weed small parts out themselves, unless they’re ordering large amounts.
You can sheet cut after a specified row of stickers to help you if you set this up in VersaWorks.

    Hi Guys,
we always cut the stickers by hand (extra charge) or supply in sheet form! Where can i find the perf cut in versaworks? Never come across that?

    thanks in advance

    Hi Dan,

Have a look at this help page from the American Roland site.

You have to create a new swatch and name it PerfCutContour, when you have done this and create your cutline with the spot as you would with a normal cutcontour in Illustrator or Corel you open up the eps/pdf and in VersaWorks under the cut controls a new options box will appear with settings for your PerfCut.

Let me know how you get on!

I buy in digital print from various suppliers who use large Mimakis down to the Roland BN20 and I usually get small stickers as they come off the printer and I trim them down to a more manageable size (doesn’t take long) Smaller runs I send to my colleague who has the Roland and this machine is perfect for the smaller run and I can vouch for the print quality which is outstanding. All the latest generation printers seem to do a very good job from solids down to small text.

Thanks all for your advice on this, i rang Roland and they were not really any help.

I was thinking the best option would be to cut down to squares with some sort of guillotine. One that allows me to do a good few sheets at a time. I’ll look into this sort of thing, but if anyone could recommend anything, that would be great, thanks.

    Thanks again for your help

sorry don’t work as every sheet has to be the same.

just lay the big sheet on the cutting table and slice them out

I see what you mean, just thought cutting by hand could be a bit too time consuming. If you want to get them all exactly the same size, do you print a guide line to cut to?

if doing them on a bn20 then the lump of printed vinyl will probably be around 500 x 1000 lay on cutting table weed lay straight edge and cut equal betweed the cut images.
first horizontal then vertical do not distrub them in between cuts.

Thanks Chris, not 100% sure i’d be capable of getting them accurate enough to stack neatly all the same size if i tried that, i will have practice some how. This is probably a weird thing to be making a fuss over though! Sorry

Roland VersaWorks has a feature to print Fotoba cutline marks in the marks tab in your job settings…if you do decide to go down that route!
Looks like a neat machine for finishing.

Yep print and cut then run them through a fotoba and your done.

The little one was about 10k AUD and the bigger one was 25k AUD from memory. Best investment I’ve ever made.

If there is a UK distributor he’ll put you onto them.

Thanks, I’ve emailed the manufacturers. Is it okay with vinyl of a range of thicknesses and do the crop marks have to be black?? That would help greatly for us as we are running a load of Edge prints and black is not part of the label run.

It doesn’t need to be black per se but the infra red sensor needs to be able to detect it. So colours like red orange white won’t work. There needs to be some contrast.

Only reason I know this is because we run app taped vinyl through the machines for runs over like 10+ to get every cut vinyl decal the same size. When we can use it our customers are amazed they are all supplied the same size when from their previous suppliers they are all over the shop 🙂

Nicola, can you let me know as well?

Years ago I nearly bought an american machine (don’t have the link for it anymore) but the reseller said they had problems with it and I never heard back.

    Many thanks,
    George

A really cool bit of kit, you would have to do alot to justify the cost, but very nice, I`ve bookparked it LOL

They have some videos on youtube of it in action

    I also received this:

    Jason

    Thanks you for your enquiry.

Unfortunately this product is no longer manufactured. The smallest Digitrim cutter we can offer is the Digitrim 44 which is a 44" wide cutter. The smallest width material this machine can handle is 5"

Below is a link to the PDF brochure.

Let me know if this machine is suitable for your application.

    Regards

    Steve

A shame as I only need one for Edge Prints 12"

Only problem is 1600mm minimum width(and cost probably, didn’t check)
