  • Long narrow sign tray.

Posted by Stuart Miller on July 20, 2011 at 12:56 pm

hi guys would appreciate some ideas on this one.
Have been asked to make a Sign fascia for a cafe which is going into this building.
The existing boards supporting the guttering are to be painted black and he has asked for a long narrow sign to be attached just below the guttering and be 40cms deep which will hang down and hide the steel girder ends.
Between the walls at either end is 8.3metres.
Thinking a long narrow tray is best, 8500 x 400mm. Would this be rigid enough only attached along the top and the ends?
Otherwise how would you support the bottom?
The back of the tray will be seen from behind so would you just paint the back or make a backing plate / 2nd tray to make the rear neater.

I also attached a side plan view to show the unsupported lower edge.
    cheers
    Stuart

    Hi Stuart,

I would not feel comfortable leaving that much hanging freely. even with interlocking panels there’s gonna be the potential for a lot of movement.

I would suggest fitting ali angle (it’s neat and no more unsightly than the back of the sig will be anyways) across the windows to line up with the bottom, then fix it top and bottom,

maybe £30 for some good quality ali angle (3mm x 50mm)

    no worries, sleep safe!

    Thats my concern Hugh
Do you mean a length along the back wall with strips coming out to the bottom of the sign, like this diagram.
Unfortunately the wall above the windows is not vertical.
I am wandering if I can use the steel girders somehow, although they aren’t quite low enough.

I would go wider so you get a fix either side on a pillar then make some strap like this from flat steel stock.

Yes Tim, the tray would be wider than the gap and fixed at either end at the bottom.
I like the steel strap idea.

You could also utilise the straps to rivet a back panel to. Knotching out around where the girders get in the way.

Give the customer the option of visible straps or not.

Also to total enclosure stops some muppet being able to swing on anything.

Good point about people swinging on any bar that may be there.
thinking I may be able to utilise the girders by attaching a spacer underneath them. This would be pretty solid be only in two places.

What about 4 lengths of solid flat 3mm aluminium with anti-flex tabs, screwed flat to the boards, and bracketed to the end walls and girders. Nothing to grab from underneath and from Ashby’s for instance would be grey backed as standard.
Might need a bit of packing here and there to make it hang right if the wood isn’t dead vertical. Fix up tight to the gutter brackets and add a black strip along its top length to lower the effective sign area a bit.
If you still need a tray effect then just have returns on the ends and bottom.

    HI Stuart,

I mis-understood and thought the sign was under the canopy against the windows,

re-considering this, i’d go with Tim’s Idea for the strap supports i think.

Peter, my first thought was for using flat Aluminium panels but unfortunately the ends of the two steel girders protrude about a centimeter beyond the edge of the existing fascia. I suppose I could put a sheet of ply behind the plates to get past these, but also thought with this length of sign the return of a tray would give a bit more rigidity.
Not sure what you mean by "add a black strip along its top length to lower the effective sign area a bit."
Thanks for all the speedy replies.

they tray final return should be all the way under, just one piece

we done that before works well but plenty of screws to hold it up
problem is hiding the screws but with a bit of tinkering you might find a place and vinyl to cover over depending on your design.

putting a final return onto the wall could be an option but screws may show
