    Did this job yesterday.

The bonnet and rear were wrapped using Orajet 3951 laminated with Oracal 290f. The sides were done using Oracle 3651 vinyl laminated using 3651 clear vinyl. The black roof sections were a bit of an experiment being done using two layers of Oracle 751c series vinyl laminated together.

    Really like it.

Seems a shame to have trimmed round the badges though and not carry it on to the bottom at the back. But I think it’s really striking!

Looks good Phill, my compliments to the chef.

Question though, was there a reason for using 3 types of vinyl and 2 Laminates? personally would have used the 3951 for the sides and back and printed the black roof section, Ok its a bit dearer, but not so as to make a big difference in the overall price? and less work I would have thought.

Great job Phill, but agree with Gavin. Would it have been easier to remove the badges and leave them off?

    Phil looks great!!

Any reason for not removing the badges?

We done quite a few jobs lately that need badges removing – been ok on later vehicles but some earlier ones bit of a pig!!

Had a transit with one piece back door that needed the transit badge moving to put web address – someone must have part glued it on with super glue – it ended up damaging the lacquer…

Most jobs if we are removing badges we tell customer we not liable for any damage…

The job took us all day yesterday. Didn’t finish until 7pm by which time I was exhausted. I’m actually surprised at how physically tiring these jobs are.

I agonised about removing the badges – the vinyl would’ve been easier to fit without them but I was worried about breaking them as that’s what happened when I took the badges off my daughters car. But next time I’ll probably take the badges off with the owners consent

The sides of the van are pretty flat hence my choice of calendered (3651) vinyl for the sides along with it’s corresponding clear laminate. The bonnet and rear required more stretching of the vinyl so I chose to use the cast vinyl and laminate for this. The black was a bit of an experiment. I was going to use cast vinyl for the sides as well and print the black area but decided to use the cheaper 3651 option to save on materials (I felt the top rear quarters needed a cast vinyl because of the compound curves).

I would have just printed the whole lot on cast, it can’t make much different to the price and you’d save that in labour time anyway.

That’s pretty much what Alison said as well Jon – but I reckon I saved about £45 on materials by doing the sides with the calendered vinyl. Maybe it would have been quicker if I had used cast all over I don’t know. But the sides were the easier bit anyway so I’m not convinced I would have done them any quicker with cast.

    Very nice Phil,

Youre right about it being tiring. I find i`m more mentally tired after a wrap. It`s like i`ve spent all day doing a jiogsaw puzzle.

Agree with the others on the badges though. Use a heat gun and a cataloy spreader to remove them.

We just give them back to the customer in an envelope so they can fit them back on if they want.

    Very impressed m8, nice one.

Another way to remove the badges is with a piece of plastic strapping used to secure packages.bit of heat does help too.

Yesterday I did the second van in this series (there are four altogether – each featuring different suppliers). This time I used "Rapid Air" vinyl on the bonnet and sides – but used conventional cast wrapping vinyl on the rear (because of the recesses). I was delighted with how much easier the Rapid Air vinyl was to use and will be using it again in future projects.

    Very nice Phil,

was it the 3951 that you used?
    I know they do a 3551 also think that’s a poly though

Hi Ade – I used the 3951 on the bonnet – and the 3551 on the sides (both being the Rapid air versions) with non Rapid Air 3951 on the back 😀

    Hi Phill

    That looks excellent.

Did you remove the side rubbing strips? We always seem to snap most of the fixings and have to replace them.

    Again top notch

    Hi Phill,
Very nice job. The vans look superb. You’ve made a good job of disguising the joins. I would of taken off the badges on the back doors, it lets it down a little, but it’s a minor detail. Can’t wait to see the next 2 vans.

    P.S. I thought you said you couldn’t wrap ? 😉

    Cheers
    Ewan.

Hi David – I left the rubbing strips on and trimmed around them.

Ewan – my wrapping experience is limited as you know – but I reckoned the best way to learn was to just go ahead and do it. I did gain some experience by wrapping my daughters car first before doing these. 😀

Looks very good 😀 Part wraps always look good.

Ref the rubbing stripes, these are very simple to remove on a new van, just hit them a good thump forward, they clip straight off

Took the advice from earlier and removed the badges on the rear this time

I wondered where you were recently Phill,
as I hadn’t seen you on the boards, you have been busy…

van looks good, was it done on your cadet? I cant see the joins,

    Peter

  • Phill Fenton

Thanks Peter – yes it was done on the Cadet – the join is 2/3 up the filler cap on one side and at the lower part of the E of Exide on the other (just below the door slider). I’m pleased you can’t see the join in the photo but you would be able to detect it in real life due to the ridge it produces at the overlap.

I find these jobs very satisfying but they are hard work and very time consuming. We spent all day yesterday applying this one 😕

for someone who is supposed to be a novice at wrapping it looks very good.

Can I ask, who supplies the Rapid air material you mentioned.

Europoint supply the Rapid Air product – but other manufacturers also supply a similar type with embossed glue patterns on the rear to allow air to escape more easily.

    HI Phil

I’m always trying to remove badges. I’m using heat gun to warm up the glue and so far on 10 cars I didn’t make a scratch on surface.

Of course customers must sign on paper that they agree with badge removal.

    Excellent wrap.

I use a heat gun to heat the metal around the badge. Never apply heat directly to plastic badges. I then use fishing line to cut the adhesive in behind the badge. Alot like floshing your teeth. If your mark the paint abit of polish and those light line marks are gone.

Finally did the last in the series of four vans yesterday.

Once again a long tiring day – and trying to get the stripes running level and straight was a nightmare 😕

We’re getting faster at it though – finished the job a bit earlier this time.

Nice job Phill, I would have considered laying the stripes on separately though,
    or was that not feasible?

I did consider applying them over the top like you said Peter, but I thought maybe the breaks created by the stripes would reduce the amount of compound curvyness (is that a real word 😕 ) being wrapped at the rear quarters.
