I mentioned in an earlier post that I was at the same school as Les McKeown of the Bay city Rollers 😎

My Grand mother used to be a charlady for Katy Manning who was an actress in the Doctor who TV series. 😛

My Uncle was a friend of Tommy Cooper and was himself featured on “News at Ten” when as a serving British soldier in Northern Ireland he went AWOL and asked for political asylum in Southern Ireland 🙄

My Mother once kissed Des O’connor 😕

What famous people are you linked to?

    (Henry will know a few 😉 )

I’ve been shooting with Ian Botham and Gareth Edwards (boring or what!)…

…and only recently I had a brief chat with Robert Llewellyn (of Red Dwarf and Scrapheap Challenge fame) in a local garage…I was fitting a sign and he happened to say hello. Turns out he was there selling his dear old mom’s car (she’d lived in the village and had recently passed away)….

    …oh, and I once had a kiss from Debby Harry! 😀 – that’s a long story!

would love to chat with Patrick Stewart (being a bit of a trekkie!)…one day – one day….

    that’s about it!

    more soon

My Dad was Quartermaster (driver!) on the first Merchant Navy ship to go into Germany after the War. My Mums Auntie used to make all of Lord Mountbattens Dressing Gowns, by hand.

A mate of mine was the drummer in the Nashville Teens who’s one major hit was Tobacco Road in the Sixties.

One of our lads down the Boxing Club (Paul Sculfor) won the News of the World face of the year comp in 94 (I think) and has since been the Levi’s man (Mermaid Ad) Lucozade (Fat Slags Ad) Armani etc., and is one of the highest paid models in the world. Another lad has recently ‘pulled’ the daughter of the second richest bloke in South Africa and is himself embarking on a modelling career……good looking chaps us Boxers 😀

I’ve met Alexander O’Neill, Jeremy Beadle, Barry Hearn a handful of top boxers and some other minor celebs but my most embarassing moment was meeting blonde stunner Caprice at the Radio Station I was working on. My wifes workmate a spotty faced junior was a big Caprice fan and he’d asked for me to get a Calendar autographed. I’d taken my kids in to meet her and she chatted to them for a few minutes signed some photo’s and I presented the Calendar for her to sign. I hadn’t looked at it and as she flipped it open she said ‘HEY…I recognise that butt’ and there she stood in all her glory’…….It wasn’t until she was out of the building that I realised she must have seen me as some sort of dirty old man! 😳

we have a famous client – Madonna she has a country house only 5 miles
from the unit and have done £1000’s of pounds of panel and post signs
for the estate, when having an initial site meeting with the land agent she came into the office with Guy Ritchie and Vinnie Jones chatted with me and discussed the signage, have met her several times since, saw her not to long ago mowing the lawn on a drive on tractor wearing a stetsun (sp!) and wearing shorts she drove over and ask how the signs were going…..nice lady one problem when we go and fit all the fitters want to go…..

On my last year holiday i met Martin Kemp he had the villa next door..

Before working in the music business, I went to the same school and year as Peter Scudamore (benedictine monastery boarding).

My godfather is the husband of Judith Chalmers.

My father was quite famous in his circles, Captain of HMS Endurance before and during the Falklands conflict, (they named a piece of land after him in Antartica Barker’s Bank). Captained the new Sheffield on its launch in the late 80’s, after the navy he wrote 3 books, was Chairman of the Royal National Mission to Deepsea Fisherman until he died in 97 (cancer 63). He was Deputy Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, Freeman of the City of London, CBE etc. Makes me abit of a black sheep 🙂

My years in the music business were proffessional so are not really the same as chance meetings or such…..nevertheless there are loads of memories stories, and alot of fun, and we worked with most of who you are familiar with, we did spotlights on showdays, I still see friends when they come to Stockholm, and still go out and do the odd bit of driving, keep my hand in, trucks and nightrider busses.

Some memories that I will always have are doing Live Aid at Wembley Stadium, we had just finished Sprinsteen’s Born in the USA tour changed the stage in Wembley to a revolve, put in loads and loads of hours that week for free, we had a replica Hard Rock Café backstage for artists and crew, which was abit like a who’s who 🙂

The tour list is huge, most of the large acts through the 80’s and early mid nineties to subsidise the sign business in the early years, and to keep my hand in, during summer (industrial breaks here) in more recent years.

Queen, Madonna, David Bowie, RobertPlant, Jimmy Page, Stones, ZZ Top, Janet Jackson, McCartney, Bon Jovi, Eagles, Celine Dion, Springsteen, Mike and Mechanics, Genesis, David Lee Roth, Rush, Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Monsters of Rock, Simple Minds, Style Council, Engelbert, Tom Jones, Barry Manilow, Duran Duran, Santana, Cure, Roxette, etc etc.

Sometimes today I get itchy feet and want to ring up and go back on the road, but in reality I really enjoy my business today. In 92 when I started my business, I thought it would be really hard to find an occupation that could top what I did before, but I really love making signs, I think we are all really lucky to have found such a varied in interesting proffession.

The most important thing today is that I can be home with my wife and kids, and see them grow up…even more now as I just found out there’s another one on the way!

    Some excellent folk met guys..
That Madonna ones a cool client Adrian…nice one 😉

    Well here goes me.. 😕

My dad had a few nightclubs and snooker halls in central Scotland before trying to retire and ending up making signs.
I was a bit younger then but seen a constant stream of snooker personalities
Play charity games with my dad, he became good friends with some like Dennis Taylor, ray rearden, Alex Higgins etc..
My dad met a young guy that came into his snooker club one day with his dad. He was entering a competition he was running. The wee boy was about 10 or something I can’t remember but very young. The lad lost but After the tournament my dad approached the lads dad and asked would he consider letting my dad sponsor his son, pay him for entering tournaments around the country etc. The lads dad declined and said he was a bit to young for all that at the moment.. Understandable! Some years passed and the same wee boy picked up the world title for snooker. “Stephen hendry” 😮

One of the lisben lions (celtic player) & then tom mckean (Scottish olympic runner) came to view my dads house when he was selling it.

My brother is probably my best catch .. Although not well known on TV etc he is known all over the world for his art. He is expected to pick up the turner award this year, fingers crossed. Because of his past as a musician in a band called teenage fan club, he became friends with many musicians and still is to this day. Only a few weeks ago I sat in my brother’s home with getting drunk with him & the lead singer of the bluebells.. You may remember him. He was the guy that song “young at heart”
Great guy.. Still heavily into the music business but more background stuff. He writes music for ronan Keating, Sinead oconner, Annie Lennox and many many more to this day. Top bloke.
So theres him.. and many other musicians.. Not sure if they will be familure to many of you though. A couple a still see now and agan are Sean Dickson (soup dragons) bobby Gillespie (primal scream) Again very nice people and a great laugh to be around.
I only wish I could have met some more of the folk he mixes with today..
From yoko ono, byork, king & queen of spain (or some place like that) to just a few weeks ago when he had a meal with david blaine just hours before he entered the box in London…

Ok now My own “SAD” claim to fame, many years ago now
I was the uk number 1 for bmx dirt jumping. My younger brother tony was number uk 1 for bmx racing and number 26 in the world. He crashed in the quarter finals on tv.
I retired from dirt jumping when I was turning 18.. I broke my ankle and discovered beer! I was the first in the world of bike jumping to perform ramp to ramp jumping in front of crowds on people at the race meetings. My party piece when doing this was I would jump clean off the bike in mid air and get back on it before hitting the other ramp and landing successfuly… (the ramps about 8 foot high and about 35 feet apart)
This jump and many others like it are now commonly seen on sky sports “extreme sports” channel. Some of the folk doing them are the same ones that competed with me way back… these same guys are pulling these same jumps I did then but are now getting paid around 100 thousand a year! Ahh well.. if only I had blah blah blah? 😆 😆

Well that’s my waffling claim to fame.. lol

One of my clients is Jodie Kidd’s brother and 1 of my mates has had Prince Harry play for his polo team. I cant think of any more at the moment

I’m meeting Simple Minds at the end of this month Henry. Unfortunately their charging me £28.50 for the privelage and they’ll be about a thousand others there as well! 😀

I was really hacked off about the Live Aid ticket thing. I was working in Wembley on the Monday, went to the box office to be told they would be on sale on the Wednesday. Tried a hard luck story…but I’m in the area etc., but it didn’t work. Went back on the Wednesday to be told they’d put them on sale a day earlier and had now sold out! The xxxxxxxxxxx!

Ironically they reckon the touts had gotten hold of so many they were selling them off cheap half way through the day and although I toyed with the idea of chancing it decided not to. BIG mistake….. would have liked to have been there.

Well I didn’t realise that I was a celebrity until I visited my doctor.

the wife ses to me one day: ‘John! Why haven’t we got no children?’
    I said; ‘I don’t know honey’
She said: ‘You get yourself down to the doctors and find out why we ain’t got no children’

So I gets straight down to see my doctor
Well after what he gone told me I went down to the stores and got me some of them there fine fancy clothes, top hat an’ all.

The wife said: ‘John! Why are you wearing them there fancy clothes’
I said: ‘ Doctor says I’s impotent and if I’s impotent I gotta look impotent!

..and so my rise to fame

Met quite a few over the years at race meetings – Ayrton de Silva (Senna), Nigel Mansell, Martin Brundell, etc. this was when they raced nothing more than Formula Ford. Erik Carlsson (Pa Taket, Saab renowned Rally Driver) gave me his watch at Goodwood a couple of years ago.

Children attend same school as Dave Richards did.

Had to push numerous RAC Rally Cars up a side street in Chester on a Sunday morning, the church congregation were complaining about the noise! (:)

One of my teachers at school was Julie Andrews natural father, and Julie’s stepsister went to the same school that I did.
