  • Lettering on roller shutters

    Hi

Just had a call for a restaurant owner that wants lettering on his roller shutters.

First idea is to offer him regular vinyl, I hav’nt saw the condition of the shutters.

Would using mask vinyl and paint if/whether they are rusted or not be a sensible alternative?

It all depends o the state of the roller shutter, if they are new or in very good condition I’d use a good quality 5/7 year vinyl paying attention to trimming slightly away from the slat edge.

You could use paintmask and spray but if the shutters are galvanised you will have to prime them first.

    Cheers Neil

I have to meet up with him later and have a look.

I’m wondering what kind of paint and primer would you use for this kind of thing as well,

Would it be regular auto materials or something more specific?

If I primed using the stencil and let it dry before applying paint would the primed layer crack or peal when the mask was removed??? 🙁

Or do you thing I could prime with clear acrylic spray then apply mask?

I would definitely go the vinyl route rather than painting.
At least when I use a mask, I make a huge mess, and I can just imagine the paint running where you don’t want it to be.
I think I would tell the guy to contract a regular house painter if the slats are rusty/yucky, then you can come back in two weeks (when the paint is cured) and letter them in vinyl.
Not knowing what the thing is made of, it’s hard for me to say which would be the best paint to use.

James if it’s a take away sort of place then you will probably find he just wants the shutter boxes done which is pretty straight forward with just vinyl.
If it is the shutters that he want’s doing I would still use vinyl because you may have trouble fitting a mask without leaving lots of gaps for the paint to bleed through.

Just make sure you quote using a good quality vinyl that will conform to the shutters and make sure you give yourself enough time to do the job, it’s the heating that will take a fair bit of time to ensure the vinyl stays on. First one I did took about 2 hours longer that I had thought it would.
