Left In The Lurch By XPRES Need Help!
Posted by Moonsmurf on April 18, 2004 at 4:44 pmHi
After recently purchasing the full package from Xpres of Sublimation Printer (epson 1290) Cap Press, Heat Press and Roland Plotter. I have been trying unsuccessfully to get straight, productive answers from Xpres and their technical Staff. It seems that their back up is somewhat lacking 😥When I print using Corel Draw 11 I find the colours to be poor. Red at best is a salmon pink. All the cartridges have been checked and are fine, ink flow is fine. I am printing onto Xpres standard sublimation papers, and their sublidark papers.
Pantone colours took 4 hours to print on 1 a4 sheet !
Even when applied the end results are still washed out looking. Can anyone offer any ideas or help??
Thanks
Elaine 😆

Not got a clue where practical sublim is concerned, but your problem smacks of colour profiles/set ups are wrong somewhere!!!
I would think thatt he inks are a different make up to print inks, because of the way they work.!!!
I am sure someone on here will come to your rescue, sorry i can’t be of any real help 🙁

It can be improved and the Tech people at Xpres can talk you through this. You may need some patience though!!?
I had the same problem and willl shortly be changing my ink supplier from Xpres to Rotech. Nuff said!
If you can let me know what settings you have in Corel 11 I’ll run through them with you to check against mine.

are you using a colour correction software?
are the colours still incorrect when printed onto the substrate?

Hi Guys
When I rang and did get to talk with Xpres they told me I wouldnt need any colour correction software and that they didnt sell Corel and therefore wouldnt offer any futher assistance on it (!)When the paper is applied to any medium from garment to coaster the colours are still very poor.
If you guys think I need colour correction software any reccomendations??
Thanks for all your replies soo far 😆

NO, you don’t need colour correcton software with the Xpres own brand Inks, but you do need to persevere to get to speak to someone who can run through the correct settings for Corel. It took me 4 months of struggling before getting the right settings and in general they are ok but not brilliant.
If you want to PM me I’ll forward my phone mumber and you can phone me to check your settings in Corel 11 with mine?

Ok, here’s what I was told to do. Bare with me, this is from memory!
Under Control panel, go into Printers and right click on your Subli printer. Mines an Epson 980 (The settings may be different for the bigger Epson).
Click on Colour Management tab, set to Automatic and the Colour Profiles box below should be empty.
Within the Corel Printer Set Up. (Click File Printer Set Up) Under MAIN Tab, PAPER=Photo Quality Inkjet paper, tick COLOUR and CUSTOM settings. Under PAPER Tab click printable area standard. Under LAYOUT, all unticked.
Return to MAIN Tab and click on ADVANCED.
It should be set as follows.
PAPER=Photo Quality Ink Jet Paper
COLOR=ticked
COLOR MANAGEMENT tick NO Color Adjustment
PRINT QUALITY=Photo 720DPI
HIGH SPEED untick
FLIP HORIZONTAL tick
FINEST DETAIL tick
EDGE SMOOTHING tickAs I say, this worked for me to a degree, I’m not 100% happy with the strength of the RED produced but it is much better than what I was getting before using the Xpres Inks.

The settings I’ve got for the 1290 and Corel 11 is on Main
Paper – Photo Quality Inkjet
Colour – Custom
In the box below – ICM
in Advanced
Photo Quality Inkjet Paper
Print Quality – Photo 720dpi
High Speed – ticked
Flip Horizontal – ticked
Fine detail – ticked
Edge smoothing- offMy Brother has the color control box ticked in the Advanced section, (instead of ICM) so he can adjust the colours manually.
Hope this doesn’t confuse you more!!

The difficuties almost certainly stem from whether you have the correct settings in the Colour Profiles box. If you have the ICM Colour profiles (which are supplied by Xpres I think) then it may follow that these are the ones to use on a 1290 Epson. However when we went through the ICM set up it wouldn’t work with my printer so the decision was made to dump them and override in favour of Corel Colour palettes.
CMYK or RGB both work, although one is deemed better than the other. I can never see why??

Xpres do not use an .ICC colour profile. In the colour controls section of the Epson 1290 printer driver, Gamma 1.8 (default) and mode to Automatic (default). Set the Contrast to +10, Cyan +10 and Yellow at +5. Photographic images should be printed at 1440dpi.

Hi Elaine
I have not used the Xpres ink, so cannot comment on that one. However the inks I have used so far are Sawgrass which was way to expensive and clogged the printheads. The next ink which I used did not have a brand name was OK but no longer available. Next I tried Lyson which I found to be too weak, especcially the black. Then on to Rotech , the problem I had with this one was blue printed too purple and the profile which sat in the Epson driver was not much use. I am now on Artanium with a bulk system. This ink has a proven colour profile which can only be run through Corel Draw or Photoshop. I have not set this profile up yet as I have just recently acquired this system. Also I have always used the Epson Photo Quality Paper (I only print onto hard substrates)
Cheers
Jim
