5 pictures below, please allow for them to load. sorry. 😀

below is some work that i fitted this afternoon.

it consists of brushed stainless steel letters, illuminated with LED’s in red, forming a halo effect.
a glass partion, (NOT COMPLETED YET) in glass etch with company logo on it.
a glass panel raised on metal stand offs with etch panel on the rear fitted to the front of a counter.

it all took about 3 hours to fit & custopmer was over the moon. which is always good. specialy on a cold friday night 😕

Brilliant Rob those letters are excellent. I want to try some leds on lettering outside, do you have a supplier for outdoor leds?
I got some from Ashby just to do a display in the shop but you can’t use them outside unless they are covered.

    Cheers

thanks for the replies guys 😉

dave, the leds i have used there are from ashby. ive been having a play with them over the last few weeks and i have several jobs i am doing just now using them. (a product test will be loaded soon on these)
the leds in this sign are covered/enclosed in these built-ups. but i have never heard of them only being for indoor use. infact, the gallery on the leds website show them being used and not covered on signs for TGI frodays?
i will be chatting to them again on monday, so ill ask about this. thanks for mentioning though. 😉

ill also be testing some from appletec soon, so will keep all updatied on those too. 😉

Rob, TGI Fridays had a few problems with the LED’s and went out to tender recently for new signage across their whole estate, what used to be LED is now neon (and is featured in the recent edition of Sign Directions).

The problem with LED’s externally if they’re not covered is that the trays or connectors can short out and so most distributors (in my experience)will recommend that they are enclosed in some way

    brilliant work rob!! 😀

love the neon!! 😛 and the flute font works great with the three letters 😛

(flute G is my favourite out of all the block fonts) 😛

    Great work Rob, very nice.

We have a couple of jobs coming up using s/steel built ups and are unsure about led or neon, so glad you posted this 😀 We have just ordered in leds from Ashby to have a try 😕

    hi neon wizard
thanks for reply mate, really interesting. and hope to hear more of your veiws on this as i am at the beginning of a learning curve here and want to share my thoughts/finds etc with the boards. so all the help and advice will help not only me but many others.

regarding tfi fridays in sign directions?
i know this was a rebrand, but all signage spec ( i would imagine) would not be (initially) cost effective in leds? its all very big built up text with illumated panels and the like.
ide guess using neon cheaper and brighter for the spec given?
from memory, it doesnt say that the choice was based on any failure of led’s?
i am not by any means trying to say you are wrong, just that i have been reading up on leds. and one thing they seem to suggest is that they stand up to weather conditions very well and far outwiegh neons life expectancy?
i understand what you say about the jumpers and the like being effected, so may not necessarily be the leds in question, can you elaborate on this mate?

again, not trying to say in anyway you are wrong, just stating what i am led to believe and would like your own veiws?

Rob, I didn’t for a minute think that you were doubting my word 😉 but the questions are good ones.

The debate of LED vs neon is perhaps one for a different thread but we’ve looked at a lot of LED’s and have come up with the conclusion that they have their place but are not the ‘ideal replacement for neon’ which is how they’re being marketed, the illumination levels are not as good, the product is still so new how can any realistic life expectancy be given? Sure in lab tests or the like 80,000 hours may have been acheived but how will they stand up in a set of external letters on a shopfront in Aberdeen? No-one can answer that question because the product hasn’t been in use long enough yet.

In answer to your question about the TGI project in particular – when Whitbread spoke to us about the job a lot of design work had already been done and the LED issue was not going to be shouted about because they were not deemed a failure, just not suitable for that particular application (wrong tool for the job, nothing more than that). Neon was brighter, had a 40,000 hour life and looked good where it was exposed (LED’s don’t).

I must admit though to being a bit of a traditionalist and think that neon looks, well, sexy – LED’s don’t float my boat in the same way although I have used them in a couple of jobs (small built up letters at touchable level) and feel sure that I’ll be using LED’s in the future. Having said that though I will still look at the neon option first (if it’s my choice) as I think it’s overall impact is better than LED.

We’ve used LED’s on a couple of jobs made by applelec. They look sweet.
