  • LED or other backlit options for existing raised letters

    Hi All,
I fitted some raised letters to a shopfront for one of my customers this time last year. At the time he was happy with the existing spotlights on the shop which shone onto the letters.

Trouble is – he has now changed his mind and decided that he would rather have a backlit halo effect on the letters. As the letters are pretty thin – about 15-20mm stems and already have the locators glued on in various places – I have said that I’ll have to look into it as I’m not sure this is possible.

Does anyone know of any really thin LEDs or similar product that could do the job? I have tried Sign&Digital here in Ireland but with no luck.

Any help with product names / suppliers greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    John.

I should add – the letters are made from 19mm foamex and have no channels routed into the backs as he was not interested in LEDs at the time of manufacture. Each letter is approx 10" high and as I said its a pretty thin stem on the font used (15-20mm).

    Hi

without the channel recess you will want the thinnest LEDs possible so the ‘casing’ of the LEDs isn’t too visible from the side. Applelec’s Twister and the miniature version are really thin BUT the spec says they must be mounted onto metal/dibond for heat dissipation. However, we have used them on plastic letters on two jobs dating backs 2-years and they continue to work well and look good with no problems. It was easy to fit them around the stand-off locators.

Other things to consider are the power and a matt backing. ie. you have to daisy chain power to each letter – are the letters mounted on a panel that can be removed to put the wiring behind, or will you have to put the wires between the letters on the front? It’s best to put a ‘halo’ of matt vinyl around each letter to diffuse the pin spotting effect.

    Hope this helps

I use the Chiplite ministicks (5 mm to 40 mm)
