laying garden steps
Posted by Brian Little on April 19, 2009 at 12:00 pmyip you read it right ….any help appreciated ..i aint get a clue .Garden needs some serious work done but i need to lay steps up to my workshop i was thinkig of ornimental type slabs . I was going to dig out the ground and put bricks under them and cement in …is that the right way to do it any help appreciated my friends

I think a lot depends on your ground Brian.
My patio just had a layer of sand thrown down, then levelled, with the slabs laid on top. If your ground is softer than mine, then you might need a more substantial base.
The beauty of laying on sand is that if, in a few years time, they have settled and aren’t level anymore, you can just lift the low parts and add more sand. Concrete them, and you’re stuck.

I did what John suggests.
Dig it out, put down some black plastic to keep the weeds at bay, then sand, then the concrete stepping stones.
Except I used bricks.
And I still have some weeds despite the black plastic.
Gonna rip it all up and redo it this summer.
I would avoid cementing them in.

– Convert old kitchen to bedroom
– Prepare boat to go back in the water
– Complete ANY other task as directed by the Domestic Chief of Staff !!!
