Layering banner vinyl
Posted by Mark Jahn on February 24, 2009 at 9:10 pmHi all.
Just doing a 3 metre banner using 451 with a contour which has gone on fine. When I’ve come to put the second layer on I’m finding that it’s riddled with bubbles. Should I be layering before applying the whole image onto the banner?
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,
I did my own 1.5m banner for a cage fight event last week and layered on the banner, all seemed ok.
It was only a one off event so I just used some old 651 stock and all was fine.

Mark have never done layers on a banner, but I would be inclined to layer it first that is using banner vinyl, because a banner doesn’t always lay flat when applying, will be interested what others say.

Thanks for that Paul.
I wonder if the 451 is a bit pickier about it’s application then…? Or maybe it’s the surface of the banana banner that’s contributing to the problem.

Lynn has a point about banners not laying flat, especially if hemmed. When I did mine I had it tight across the bench by using a few self tappers through the eyelets, not ideal but im replacing my work surface soon anyway.

Yes, I think you’ve got a point there Lynn. The more I think about it the more I believe it’s the banner surface that’s causing the problem.

I usually apply vinyl to banners wet cos of potential uneven surface, no soap just sprayed water, the vinyl grabs quickly in any event, not had a problem laying layers in the past… not to say I won’t in the future though.. :lol1:

When doing a banner I apply the first layer dry. The second layer I use either RT or RT2.
No problemo.

I use banner vinyl wherever possible, always dry.
Used some grafityp 200 series this week in an emergency and it will not adhere to the banner right, itll peel off very soon but had to be cheap and had to be quick. 😕 -
must confess I’m not a huge fan of multi layer on banners. Bannana Banners are usually pretty good though.
I’d be layering it off the banner as lynn suggests, then put it on in one go.

Thanks everyone for your input.
Vinyl went on lovely after I’d layered both pieces before applying.
I’m convinced that the surface of the banana banner caused the problem with the second layer but it’s lesson learnt for the next time.
