Latest Scam – watch out
I’ve just come across another new scam that I want to warn everyone about.
I just had a phonecall – when I answered the phone there was someone talking to someone else in the background. I said hello a few times but the caller appeared not to hear me and hung up.
I did a 1471 to check the callers number (and call him back) only to realise that the number began 0870.
Is this not a premium rate number? I could be wrong but I’m assuming the intention is to get people calling them back on these premium rate numbers.

0870 is a national rate number Phil, something like 15p/min during the day I think.
Some people with them do get a % of the call, but it’s only a couple of pence per min. So doubt they are doing it as a money making scheme.

Digital camera surprise delivery scam
Dorset County Council’s Trading Standards Service is warning residents across the county about a mailshot claiming a digital camera is awaiting collection.
A sudden flurry of complaints have been received in the new year about a card sent out bearing the name ‘PDS, Parcel Delivery Services’ stating ‘Digital Camera. The above item is awaiting your instruction to arrange delivery to your address’. Those receiving the card are then invited to call a ‘despatch line’ which is a premium rate telephone number charged at £1.50 per minute, with calls lasting nearly 6 minutes.
Complaints are now being investigated by the premium rate telephone watchdog ICSTIS (The Independent Committee for the Supervision of Standards of Telephone Information Services) and they have disconnected the premium rate phone line. The card originates from a post office box in Wrexham.
Ivan Hancock, divisional trading standards manager for Dorset County Council, said:
“Spending nearly ten pounds on a call to the so called ‘despatch line’ is a costly mistake. It looks as though the new year is bringing us the same old tricks aimed at conning consumers. Make it your new year resolution to be wary of anything suggesting you dial premium rate numbers, which begin 090.”

One that has been doing the rounds here comes by fax, it tells you that your number has been puchased on a fax list, and you will be recieving adverts on a regular basis, to unsubscribe you reply on a premium rate fax number that has a very slow machine, consequently the fax can cost £10 or more…..

Thanks for pointing that out Brian. I wasn’t 100% sure if 0870 was premium rate or not.
I’m so paranoid these days at the number of unscrupulous calls we get that I think everyone’s out to get me 😳

another scam is a relatively new ebay scam,
you’ll receive an email from a supposed ebay user who’s asking a question thru the “ask a seller a question” button. do not answer these emails or click on the links, the only link that’ll work is one that redirects you to sign in, DO NOT SIGN IN !!
they usually claim that they’ve bought something from you, are bidding on an item, or something else, always check your ebay messages, if it aint in there, then it’s fake ! copy the name and paste it into the ‘find a member’ in the ‘community’ section, nearly all the usernames are those that havent been used for a while, or are no longer registered, the one who are registered probably know nowt about it. just delete the emails,
how do i know they’re a scam ?? simple, they’re coming to an email address of mine that has never been used for contact via ebay, i simply added it to my ebay auctions so people could contact me directly about other stuff !!

lol, just checked that mail account and i have four more, mostly the links lead to other sites selling everything you can imagine, though a few are definitely after your password, cant put fake ones in either !!

Hi all,
I’m an ebay user and I get loads of scams such as:
Barclays Bank – please confirm your details
Paypal – Your account has been put on stop
Ebay – why has my parcel not arrived
Anything from nigeria – Nearly all of these are scams
To find out if these have come from ebay just sign in as normal and check your messages
As hugh stated, dont reply, dont sign in directly through these emails and delete all of them immediatly.
