So the latest catastrophe to overwhelm mankind is swine flu…

…..is it just me or does anyone else think that once again it’s probably a lot of fuss about nothing 😕

well we know "Flying Pigs" exist, maybe they caught a dose of the "Bird Flu" and passed it onto their unsuspecting cousins the "Walking Pigs" and there we have it, simple really. 😕

Jokes aside this could be devastating if not stopped

Some are likening it to the Spanish Influenza just after the War (1)

The epidemic killed 21,000,000 though one paper says 50,000,000 (not sure where they get that figure from)

You’ve got to remember that living conditions today are nothing like they were in 1918. Even if a virus as lethal as the 1918 spanish flu virus was to appear now – there’s no way it would have anything like as devastating effect as it did in 1918. We have central heating – good food and nutrition and modern medicines.

I really don’t get it – we keep getting told of lethal viruses like , mad cow diseas, bird flu and now swine flu – yet none of these viruses are anything like as devastating as mrsa which is running rife in all our hospitals. So how come swine flu is headline news – while mrsa continues to run riot killing many thousands each year simply because our NHS management system awards cleaning contracts to the lowest bidders rather than employing cleaners "in house" who are directly answerable to hospital doctors and nurses who are in the front line

And why do all these scares involve things that I like eating? Cows, chickens, and now pigs.

Why can’t we have Mad Broccoli Disease, so that I can legitimately refuse to eat it? 🙁

To tell you truth, if "sweet and sour pork (Hong Kong style) with boiled rice" flu was in danger of becoming a pandemic.. I would become a teensy little bit concerned 😕

Thing is Rob – they’ve been hospitalised because they’ve just returned from "Mehico" and are displaying classic flu symptoms…didn’t it occur to any of the "quacks" at Monklands hospital that these classic "flu symptons" display a remarkable resemblance to a flippin great hangover 😕

So it’s official then – the whole swine flu scare was an over-reaction!

The government ordered 90 million doses of vaccine but only just over 5 million people have been vaccinated.

Someone, somewhere made a fortune out of it then 🙄

    Cynical ? moi ? (puppy-eyes)

did the other 85 million get used to salt the roads this winter?

They haven’t all been made yet Dave but the government signed a contract with GSK so have still got to buy more vaccines yet that we don’t need. 😮

When you consider that 36 million people die of starvation every year I reckon the world has bigger problems to worry about than swine flu :worry:

    This is about ‘normal flu’

    quote :

According to the Chief Medical Officer’s publication ‘Explaining Pandemic Flu'(1 March 2005):

“Ordinary flu occurs every year during the winter months in the UK. It affects 10-15% of the UK population, causing around 12,000 deaths every year.

So as many people die from NORMAL flu every year in the UK as have died WORLDWIDE of the so-called ‘KILLER SWINE FLU’

Remember CJD, Bird Flu, SARS, Swine Flu, HIV…surely we must all be on the brink of extinction by now…

Car accidents kill about 42000 each year in the US alone.not nice for anybody involved but makes the flu figure look small

The topic started by saying that swine flu was a non event.

…is it just me or does anyone else think that once again it’s probably a lot of fuss about nothing

In reply, i’m saying that an extra 14,711 people died as a direct result of swine flu !
Ok, it’s no where near the number of car accident related deaths or the fact that thousands die every year from seasonal flu

But…. it is still a huge loss of lives.

In the overall scale of things, its down to assessing the cost and benefits of spending money.
A life has a monetary value in the overall scheme of things. loss of life is tragic at a personal level, but if swine flu had turned into a real pandemic, and the jabs were not pre ordered, then we would be criticising the government far more strongly?

OK, so I’m getting cynical. :lol1:

But surely the government has been crying wolf far too many times and the majority of the population now no longer believe all the dire warnings.

Since the mid 90’s we’ve had the millennium bug, CJD, Bird flu, SARS, Weapons of mass destruction, Global warming all driven by so called experts and advisors.

I think our government "thrives" on impending notions of disaster.

So when a real problem does eventually come along – no one is going to believe them 😕

It is in the Governments interests to keep the population in a state of fear.

Give it a few years and the Big Pharma will come up with something else they can sell to the population, it’s a win win situation for them as the best form of control is FEAR!. If you remember that line just think every time when it’s relevant to you. I bet the pharma didn’t have it on SALE OR RETURN with the government did they now!!

    I totally agree Alex.

As I get older (and more cynical) I really disbelieve everything that our elected leaders tell us – simply because they are no better informed than the rest of us – but are subject to pressure groups with vested interests.

I still don’t understand how the entire "banking crisis" came about.

It seems to me that if no one had said anything, everything would have been "hunky Dory" and we would never have had the biggest recession since the 1930’s 😕

One of our banks just announced a $6Bil profit for the last 12 months Phil. Its obscene… The CEO get a $9mil bonus. I’m wondering if there was a banking crisis at all or it wasn’t a beat up by the banks to raise fees and stop us taking our money out.

Which Bank.Is their advertising slogan and a few dollars of that 6 billion was mine. How come the government doesn’t try the super tax on them as well as miners.
