Hi John!
Wow, it is a lot different over here. Not only do we not celebrate Boxing Day, our suppliers are open on December 23 & 26! Nothing like the pursuit of the weak American dollar!
I just found out this morning that my kid’s school break starts this Monday…o Joy! Rapture! I figured it would start the 23rd. So I will be listening to the patter of little feet more than I expected.
Today is my daughter’s 16th birthday. I suppose now she will be wanting to drive my shop truck all over town as soon as she gets her learner’s permit. That might be good for business, maybe folks will think I am the sexy young thing in the sign truck!
Happy Holidays to you & yours.

My sympathies Jill,
A 16 year old 👿 and female to boot !
Our daughter is now 18 and son will become a teenager next year (already going through the know it all phase – lads 😕 )
Be prepared to loose all sense of reality.

Same as Mike but will be here on Monday as the workshop could do with a coat of paint or 12 🙂 espacially the floor but must remember this year to start in the far corner and work TOWARDS the door, last year I was stuck here till the 29th!! 😆 😆
-
What a coincidence Steve
I did the same!
Except I must be smarter cos I used the acrylic which drys quicker and only had to wait in the corner 2 days 😆 😆 😆 -

Seriously envious of you guys, i just dunno how you manage it.
On Christmas Eve we get everyone`s trucks dumped into us for repairs and alterations etc and today i got news that i need to letter 3 Abnormal Load Escort Vans which need to be ready for work on the 5th of Jan.
“They`ll be delivered to you between now and Christmas Eve” i`m told.
What i`d give to have those 2 weeks off and be able to wind down etc.
Maybe one day

Finish on the 23rd.
Back on the 5th.Not much point being here really as both customers and suppliers are all on holiday.

I shall be here most of the time over the christmas period, I’m so quiet at the moment I could probably take an extended holiday but I’m afraid that if I’m not here I will lose a job that I desperatly need at the moment.
-
It’s a common problem Martin, and I sympathise. When you’re busy you worry about how you are going to get it all done, but when you’re quiet you worry about where the next job is coming from. Whatever, there’s none of the days off that the world thinks that we self employed can take whenever we feel like it.
Despite our closing times I shall probably be here messing around most of the time because I will be bored by 11am on Boxing Day. Of course it’s easy for me with my workshop door being situated five feet from my house door and I can come and go as I please.
The main reason for our shut-down is that I give my staff four weeks holiday (plus bank holidays) and the only way to avoid too much disruption during the rest of the year is to make them take a chunk of it at Christmas. I’ve only got six employees and it is amazing how few weeks throughout the year we are actually fully staffed for the whole five days.
Coming from the motor trade, where such things are impossible, I fought the long Christmas break for years but had to admit defeat in the end.

As I work from home i’ve niot set holidays as such, i’ll just check my email everyday or soa nd if any work pops up and i’m not doing anything else and don’t have a hangover i’ll just do it.
Martin, have you ever looked into call diverting from BT? this may stop you having to be in the office waiting for potential work to call. My fiancee uses it on her days off from her salon, she diverts the salon number to her mobile so if anyone rings she can still take the call, it’s ony £1.50 per month and you can activate it whenever you want and divert to any number you want. It saves being in the office if you could be elsewhere 🙂
HTH,
Gareth

We thought things would go really quiet for us at this time of year – it did last Xmas! but (touch wood) we are still nice & busy and booked with jobs up to Xmas Eve, for the in-betweeny days & fresh jobs for the New Year. Certainly not complaining about it. Yes it would be nice to close down & take a nice long break but still being a newish business we are more than happy to work.
We have the BT call divert like Gareths fiancee on our phones aswell, if we have to pop out or close the office we just pop the phone onto divert to the mobile, leave a note on the door stating due to unforseen circumstances this office is closed till such & such a time, please call the following number for off site assistance. Works fine for us. 😀
