Posted by Stuart Whitehouse on April 20, 2005 at 7:40 pm

I’ve often thought about using one of those laser leveling devices – the ones that you stick to the wall and it emits a laser down the wall – for sticking to the side of vans etc. to save constantly measuring. has anyone used or thought of using one of these or can anyone think of a reason why it wouldn’t work

I thought they’d be ideal for doing vans with no straight lines??????? or not?

many things can go wrong with those mate, save yourself the hassle.
call jag sign supplies and ask for theirs. its the only one i have saw that would work. im gonna buy one soon too… that and lazer thermometre.
lazer level from jag is about £99… pricey, but i think worth it…

please let them know where you got the details. i spent a bit of time on their stand at sign uk speaking about the group etc 😉

I have thought the same Stuart, especially when lettering Vito’s or Astra vans.
    Don’t know the answer though.

I’ve used self levelling rotating lasers for putting up suspended ceilings and laser lines for installing kitchen cabinets but have not used them to do a van as you would first need the van to be on level ground for this to be of any use. Sounds like a good idea but unless I’m missing a trick, can’t see any easy way of using a laser to set out graphics on a van.

Often thought of that myself for use on lorries/trailers etc especially if you are fitting long stripes etc…the main problem with that idea is that you have to have the van parked on dead level ground or else your graphics will be nice and straight but at an odd angle 😀

laser thermometre is for checking i am getting the proper heat in the recesses of a van when applying wrap vinyl. as you heat just turn gun away and pint laser, it tells you the temp on surface.

    laser level.
place it on any part of a van. e.g. rubber moulding or sill…
press button and it saves angle.
lift the level up onto any section of the van and press button… you move the level till it bleeps and locks at that angle. now draw china graph line.
you now have a line exactly same angle as the sill on any part of van so every line runs level with sill…

Just seen it on their website and have requested more information. £96 VAT. Could be a useful gadget, but I am a little sceptical as there is a large difference in the accuracies of laser distance measurers from the £19 B&Q specials and £300 Leica Distos.

A tip I use when getting a level on astras or vans like them is to run a narrow piece of masking along the side of the van. This I do by sight only. Sometimes takes three or four goes to get it right. Anyway the idea is all graphics can be lined up with this strip ensuring everything is running at the one level. Only a matter of getting original piece of tape looking right. A lways works for me

    Rob,

I’ll put my name on a JAG digital leveller thingy if it helps secure a group discount!

I had a play with one at the show and it does seem really accurate.

some laser levels arent self levelling, so you can line the laser up with the sill then move the beam up and down as needed. hence the van doesnt need to be on level ground. major issue is seeing the damn light!

My local tool supplier lent me a professional laser level thingy a couple of weeks ago. It was magnetic, very powerfull and compact, cost about £140
Tried it on an White astra in strong sunlight, not very good. May be some help indoors, on a dead level floor, but personaly I think lasers are an expensive bit of string! Not really suited for vehicle work. could be useful for building signs though, especially when fitting from a cherry picker.

Also been interested for a while in these things. Would be interested if a good price could be negotiated?

I haver a laser level and whilst it is a good idea, it can fgive you a false sense of security.

So many things have to be right.

The vehicle HAS to be on a dead flat surface to know that the level is level. The light has to be dark enough for a good line to show. But the biggest problem is that a straight line may not look ‘right’ for the sign. Although it is dead straight, due to the designs of vehicle these day, straight is not always ‘right’. (if that makes sense)

The one rob is talking about may be better, but my self levelling one causes as much grief in the decision making process as not having one at all.
