Laser carriage not moving
Posted by Dermot Horan on February 5, 2013 at 12:50 pmHi, My Alpha LE950 Laser carriage is not moving.
Carriage moves manually with power off, even when laser head is moved to the centre of the bed and the left or up arrow is pressed it says overstep area. Limit switches test is ok, Voltage test shows steppers are OK. Work area is correct
On startup it beeps for about 10 sec. then later another beep like it’s doing it’s startup routine but the carriage does not move.
Laser is not firing either, Preadjust or test is not working.
Door sensor and water pump switches are working.
Who does Mainboard testing?.
Thanks

Could be just about anything but if the motor has holding torque then it is unlikely to be a motor problem. Have you tried switching the leads over on the drivers to see if the fault moves to a different axis??
That would confirm the motors were good & point towards a driver problem. -
Hi Martin, Both X & Y axis are not moving. A pulse test was carried out on the stepper motors and they both moved. Have not tried switching the cables. Support recommends changing Mainboard and Display board.
Thanks for your reply. -
OK I’m no expert on these sort of things but I will have a look for some more info if you can provide me with a make & serial number. Possibly a link to a downloadable manual or something. Changing the motherboard may be your only option as I doubt it will be possible to component test the board, you will never get schematics for it. No point switching the leads around if neither of the axis are working.

Hi Martin, This is the link to the basic specs on the Alpha LE950 laser

If you PM me I will give you a link to the other info.
Thanks for your reply. -
Dermot, you have a dot appended to the link there which means it won’t resolve. Here’s the repaired link:

possibly the controller is faulty? is it a Leetro controller?

Depends what you mean when you say the controller John, yes the fault will be in the control box?system but there are parts of it that can be repaired rather than forking out for a complete new system (minus the box) lol.

Hi John, The stepper drivers number is D2 HB4 4MB similar to this

unlikely that 2 drivers have failed at the same time Dermot, have you checked to see if you are getting an output signal from the drivers??
-
Hi Martin, Yes the stepper drivers tested within the recommended range of 1-3 ohm

most far eastern machines are very similar….all the factories buy in the same parts then assemble, put their name on and sell.
They use a Leetro keypad and controller board (if your software is Lasercut /Easycut then it is a Leetro controller) …..if there is a fault here even if everything else in the machine is perfect the laser carriage will not move nor will the laser fire.

Check the config file or other options that the X and Y axes are set to go the right direction… Could be in a option called machine config or somewhere else in the drivers. You haven’t said what software it uses,
Also check all wires going to the motherboard , someone on another forum had a similar problem and it was poorly seated wires into the motherboard.
One of the biggest problems with a lot of the chinese machines is poor grounding , leads to all sorts of random and seemingly unrelated issues , we had problems with our 2 machines (Shenui’s) till we drove a copper grounding pipe into the earth and then tied all grounds of the machine to it..
