  • Largish banner fitting advice

Posted by John Harding on July 31, 2007 at 1:26 pm

As above I have a job coming up to fit a banner at about 25/30′ height the banner will be 7m x 3 or 4m and I assume it will need to be hung from one of those wire supports systems. Banner will be long term temporary ie building site advert fixed on the side of a building so fixing into brickwork.

So where best to get the requisite bits and bobs and any advice as how best to tackle the project?

    Thanks in advance – John

If it’s directly to brickwork…stock up on ‘penny washers’, screws & rawl plugs.

I’ve done umpteen like this – just use the oversized washers where the eyelets are – pull it all tight. If it’s a little bit looser than you’d like – fear not, it will eventually tighten up in the sunlight!!

    Optimum spacing probably around 18".

    Biggest PVC banner I supplied fixed to a wall this way was 15m x 3.5m…and a 23m x 2m vertically!!

I would do it the same way as Dave, otherwise you are into expensive banner frames which make the job a lot more expensive.

i also have a banner job coming up, where it will go between two buildings, maybe similar to your job John, I was thinking some kind of qire through the eyelets all the way across and fixing at either end, bit worried how much strain they fixing will take though, not sure what to use?

Mat if not going across a public road,
A cable, top and bottom, tension with turnbuckles , and use shackles to suspend the banner. tension is only needed at the ends using bungey cord. it can be drawn across the gap like a curtain.

Dont know the specs for highway use. but I think the cable has to pass through a hem.

Matt, John’s banner is to be fixed to the side of a building not suspended like yours is to be. Kevin is quite right banners that span Highways or public areas are controlled under health & Safety regulations, they come under the LOLA heading and must meet certain specifications.

Thanks guys for your input so far my client has seen the metal wire support system elsewhere and thats what he would like 😀 So any pointers in that direction would be good.

Have you got the VKF Renzel Signage brochure – they had a banner frame wall mounting system…similar to the link on their web page but I didn’t think it was as limited in size as their link suggests

might be worth a call to check it out in the morning
