  • Large format printing…..what file type and size to save at

Probably a question thats as old as the hills, but I’m very interested to know how different designers output their files for printing.

    Scenario 1:
I have a 4mb JPG and I want to incorporate it into an image file, then output it to print, at say 1200mm high.
Which size? What DPI? Which type of file?

    Scenario 2:
I have a vector image with a "placed" image file contained somewhere in it, again around 4mb for the JPG. I need it to print around 5metres square, perhaps larger.
again….Which size? What DPI? Which type of file?

If these topics have been discussed at any time previous, can anyone point me towards that topic?

Hi Bob, you back in scotland again mate, or still down south?

Lot depends on your rip and how far away it is being seen.

Something that is a fair distance away, perhaps on a building face, can be a very low resolution and still look good.

If you are up close though, I find nothing less that 72dpi, although I prefer higher.

My rip takes both Jpg, PDF and EPS. I use either, but probably favour eps as that is the way my workflow goes.

    What software are you using?

Im originating the works in either InDesign , Illustrator, or Photoshop. Dunno what the rip software is yet.

Still in Melbourne nearly 3 years now.
Hope you enjoyed your recent trip to the UK.

    Talk to ya soon.

    Everything at full size
300dpi for labels or small or highly detailed work
    150dpi for general work
75-100 dpi for really big work

    But I don’t resample.

If you have a file at 600dpi at 1/4 size you can make this 4 times larger at 150 dpi without resampling. It will print perfectly.

I save my files as PDF or eps.

    For scneario 1 I would use 150dpi.
For the second scenario I would use 75dpi.
