Haven’t heard of them myself however I’m always suspicious of sales calls out of the blue. I never buy anything over the phone unless I’ve initiated it.

Personally I use a virtual landline number and get the calls transferred to my mobile. That way whether I’m in or out I can take the call. Great features such as auto voicemail for when business is closed in the evening or weekend, blocks certain numbers and hidden caller ids and it emails you if you miss a call so you can call back. Costs me about £5 per month on a rolling one month contract.

I’m actually surprised anyone is brave enough to use that name considering what happened with them in the past, from people I have spoken to they are no better than they were last time round so they definitely wouldn’t get my vote David.

Our lines are back with BT, was held ransom with a local company over our lines when other issues arose.

If phone numbers could be like internet providers where u can buy and control ur domain then i would love it

I would never touch talk talk again, made the mistake once already. The virtual landline sounds interesting tho and will look into it

If I’m allowed to mention the company, I use Tamar Telecommunications. Once you’ve chosen your number and registered, they’ll give you a call to help you set up your account and all its features. Very helpful and polite I found.

We’re switching to plus net. Its owned by BT, but with separate customer services.

I was sick of getting riped off from our current provider, who resells plusnet to us!!!

Do you use the virtual number for incoming & outgoing Calls James? Take it you get so many included minutes for your 5 squids.

Had a quick look at the Company you mentioned but noticed you have to register before you can look at the numbers, put me off a little as some of these sites don’t seem to have a wide choice of local dialing coded.

    Hi Martin,

You don’t need to register – if you go to this page http://www.tamartelecommunications.co.u … c-numbers/ and scroll down you can put your area code in and it will show available numbers. They are generic numbers and probably won’t match your specific town exactly as area codes can cover a large catchment. If you want to appear more national, there are 0333, 0845 and 0800 numbers.

For the basic plan of £5, you get 1000 minutes of transferred calls. Basically when a customer rings your virtual number, you can choose to have it diverted to any phone you want. If you’re working from home for a day, transfer it to your home phone. If you’re at work or out and about quoting/fitting, transfer it to your mobile. No more missed sales calls.

As far as your customer is concerned, they’ve rang your ‘work’ number but you choose where to answer it. Doesn’t cost them any more than a normal call and you only pay when you’ve transferred 1000 minutes in a month. There are higher plans if you take a lot of calls.

The number only works on inbound so if I need to make an outbound call, I still use my mobile as my plan has loads of minutes included.

The upside is if you move premises locally, you still have your number so no costs involved in letting customers know and changing advertising.

On a practical level, I’ve also read of some businesses that operate 2 or more separate businesses, eg. sign making and t-shirt printing – they have different business names websites, but the same premises/number. With virtual numbers, you could buy 2 plans, have a number for each business but both transferred to your main work phone. You can then set up the control panel to tell you whether the incoming call is for signs or t-shirts and then answer with the appropriate greeting.

It works for me as I work from home. No second line with all the associated bills. I get all calls transferred to mobile so my own home land line is free – that way my wife and daughter won’t inadvertently take a business call! Also I think it can look more professional than putting mobile numbers on websites.

My fault James, it was a different company that wanted you to register first lol, yes I know how they work thanks, had a skype number for years but it’s not my local area code as that isn’t available with them. Not interested in National numbers at all, quite happy to seem like a small local company.
