  • Laminting onto coloured vinyl question

Just been give some Ritrama vinyl by a neighbour which was left over from a job, it’s pale blue and looks a bit like paint mask, but it was laminated with what appears to be frosted vinyl on top of blue calendered vinyl, just wondering why this would be. He said it went onto the inside of a swimming pool window but lifted off the next day on it’s own, so they got some unlaminated vinyl and it’s fine.
Am I missing something here? Why laminate a coloured vinyl?

If you can’t find the colour with a Matt finish off the shelf then it’s a simple way to achieve it.

Or if a sign company doesn’t want to buy it in and use what they have in stock that could be another reason.

If the vinyl failed then chances are they’ve used a laminate with different properties to the base material so it’s expanded and contracted at different rates

Exactly that. We are about to do this with a matt finish as customer wanted a certain colour that doesn’t come in that colour.

Could of failed for a number of reasons. Could of been that the laminate applied had way to much tension on it. I believe that’s a thing.

My first thoughts were to get the colour right, it’s just that they’ve now used unlaminated and all is fine, which explains the above comments about different laminate, but obviously means a compromise on colour maybe.

    Is it definitely laminate?

Sounds daft but I once had a guy come in, he’s bought graphics on eBay and fitted them, several weeks later he’s asking why the laminate is peeling… turned out to be clear app tape which was contributed cut with the film at a guess, all the subsequent layers were peeling too.. had to chuckle when he left as if quoted £200 to do the same job, he got promo grade tat and paid £90. I still got my £200 and then some for stripping the old

Yes, Definitely laminated. I managed to separate it and the overlaminate is a window frost/ dusted etch.
