  • laminating Prints. What do you use?

Posted by Stuart Miller on May 29, 2010 at 10:34 am

I am making a sign for guest house and have had a digital print done.

I usually ask for all my prints laminated for best outdoor protection.
This one has been printed on Oracal 651 but it seems the printer has forgotten to laminate it.

As I haven’t done any laminating myself yet, what over laminate should I use?
Do need to buy a specific over laminate?
It has been suggested to me that a matt dusted etch (which I have in stock) would be suitable, (mainly for UV protection) or do I need to buy something else.
The print is only 220mm square so dont really want to buy a roll of overlaminate which I will hardly use again and be more than I have charged the customer for the print!

    thanks for any advice

Ask the printer to drop you a bit of laminate in the post, not going to break the bank and seeing as they forgot it . . . . Otherwise for something pretty small use Frog Juice (think Grafityp do one too).

as karen suggests, get the printer to send you an off cut of laminate.
or… just use some clear vinyl if you have any. it will do the job just as well…

you should be able to buy clear in increments of 5 metres but not clear overlaminate. well i wouldnt think so anyway… maybe 20m minimum.

dont use etch, you will not be able to see the print below it properly, if at all.

how is the print quality on the oracal 651? we sometimes print direct to oracal 751c but the colours are never rich and vibrant like you would get if you used a a proper digital print film.

Thanks for the quick replies guys.

Normally I would hassle the printer for a bit of laminate.
Long story but it seems to have taken forever and I will not be using this printer again.

Had to ask for a reprint as first go the colours looked nothing like the proof or artwork sent. Colours came out really dark and murky.
Printer said it was because printing was in CMYK, yet everything I have done in the past has come out similar to artwork supplied.
he has redone them and they now look fine but he forgot laminate.

It was actually a Metamark rep who suggested to me to use their dusted Frost as a matt laminate. I have tried this and graphics look no different to a proper laminate. I would be quite happy using it on a visual basis , just not sure if it would give as good UV protection to the print.

Client is hassling for his sign which should have only taken a few days yet the hassle with the print has now gone on 4 weeks and I want to get it to him asap,

    quote Robert Lambie:

Rob, I will have to argue with you there. I have done this in the past when I was short of a matched laminate. The clear slid a whole 25mm downwards over time and left an ugly dirty glue shadow. 😮
Fortunately it was done on a small fleet of a local companies vehicles and because they were such bad payers I didn’t give a monkeys. If they had paid up like a good company should have I would have replaced them for free, but even they have not got the face to contact me now. :lol1: :lol1:

Sorry Stuart, if I had a matched laminate for Oracle I would happily send you some.
