Pronounced cooper cooper so I’m told, is Indonesian for butterly and this place will be selling that ethnic arts and crafts stuff (that my wife likes so all the money I made will probanly go back there 😥 ) its in Sleaford which is about 15 mile from Boston, went up this morning between rain showers not too bad as the owner makes a decent cuppa 🙂
all Medite painted, only vinyl is the bit on the right hand side and the opening times on the door, the letters are all cut out by hand on a powered fret saw and then the edges are rounded with a hand router with a 6mm rounding over bit. Oh and being a Blue Peter kid the butterfly’s antennae are made of pipe cleaner painted gold, see mum I did learn something looking at the TV for hours I now make my living with sticky back plastic although I’m a grown up I can use scissors on my own unsupervised

Lovely work Steve just one question with such a beautiful butterfly in the centre why did you repeat a mono one on the left.

Neil, thanks, without something on the left to balance the text on the right it would have looked odd and also I didn’t want anything to out do the main text either and I brought in another complimentary colour as the shop and in fact the rest of the buildings in the area are all a cream colour, it needed something to subtly lift it from all that magnolia.

That butterfly is so…so…so gorgeous! I understand why you used the icon on the left to balance the text and it does help – no question. I looked at it for a moment or two and thought ‘I really like the way that ‘peach’ section wraps under and along the lower edge of the lighter panel – it’s kinda like there’s more than one thing going on, almost like ‘a sign within a sign’.

Excellent craftsmanship Steve. Was the butterfly hand painted from scratch or did you use a stencil or plotted trace? I ask this ‘cos I can’t draw a stick-man never mind your butterfly – living in hope!

Martin C, Medite is a manufacturer of MDF and I use their exterior grade not to be confused with the Changing Rooms favourite stuff, right those doubting thomas’s out there, Paul Rafferty uses this stuff almost exclusively and has some left unpainted outside his workshop and it has been there for the past 8 years, other than it being mucky and a bit green it shows no serious weathering, no blowing splitting or anything, if you paint it properly with good quality paint it will last. Its available in different thickness’s, in this sign the background is 9mm and the lettering 18mm.The other Martin, it took me a morning to cut, rout and sand the letters and butterfly, then had the first coat of primer/undercoat drying when I left at 6pm.
Steve, err 😆 butterfly was Corel clipart and painted using a vinyl stencil except the purple colour as its a pearl colour which I sprayed onto lilac vinyl, if we ever get the sun back it should look nice.

Ah right err i thought they were a national company but it seems they’re only East Midlands, Lincs, Notts, Derbys, Leics etc. sorry mate, try the trade building places not your DIY sheds or try a specialist wood yard.

By gum its the elusive Irish pimpernel, how are you mate, wassa matter won’t the missus let you on the internet again, 😆 normal screw caps, the ones with the collar that the screw goes through with a little cap attached that snaps on to cover the screw head, I painted them the same colours as the background so they blended in.
