Hi, I’m Steve, from down South in Kent. I have no connection with the sign trade other than being an end user of graphics and lettering. I build and race sidecars on Grasstrack and Speedway( crazy yes, mad no!), thus I tend to get through a fair amount of vinyl lettering on the bikes during a race season.

I’ve been lurking in the background for a few weeks now and have already learnt a lot from this site. So, I’ve taken the plunge and registered, Please be gentle with me if I ask any stupid questions. 😕 I am interested in getting myself a cutter in the new year, in order to do my own lettering and graphics, along with a few for the other race guys. I am thinking along the lines of a Summa D60. Can anybody advise me on these things or should I go for another make or model?

Hi Steve and welcome. Blimey the last time I went to a grasstrack meeting (about 1980) on my “motorcycle combination” we thought we’d have a go on the way home and ended up straddled accross a large ditch with my mate suspended in mid air in the chair.

Hi Steve and welcome to the boards, you will learn as much as you want to on here if you keep asking questions and read others posts, as for the plotter I’m afraid I can’t help either as I use a graphtec plotter.

Not only are there loads of bikers on here but a great many folk happened into the trade through luck more than design…so you’re amongst good company!

Hello Steve, I haven’t done the ‘say hello’ bit myself yet but I can comment on the D60 cutter. I use it with ‘signtools 3’ launched from Corel and it works fine. Might be a good place to start. I’m well into computers but knew nothing about vinyl cutting when I bought my D60 last year and I’ve had no real problems.

The only thing to watch is I run off windows 98 on a desktop PC through the com port. If you want to use windows xp (like I do on my laptop) you can’t use sign tools as it doesn’t support it. However, you can use wincut 2.1 on XP through a USB lead which should come with the cutter.

    Hope this helps,

    Andy

    Hi Steve

Sure you’ll get lots of useful advice – I too use Roland machinery. I am self-taught though (hot)

    Hi Steve,
Welcome to the board. I used to live down your way as a kid…Lived in St Mary’s Bay and went to primary school in Dymchurch. I used to go to the speedway quite a bit in my late teens but lost touch. There has been a new purpose built Motorplex here in Perth for a few years…Drags, speedway and motorcross in the one spot…Petrolheads delight.

    Aye welcome too

Just bought a D60 myself and seem to be ok goes at some tune sometimes doesn’t hang about when cutting.

Just like me bikes an OWO1 and an SP1 with a few mods (they don’t cut though)

Very helpfull people here and I can vouch for that.

    Gordon.
