no, not the Charlotte Church song…

just need your opinions on this illustration, it’s eventually going to be looking at a farm-yard, 100% done in photoshop, and this is it at 50% size:

Here it is at 100%, I start off low res and keep increasing the size and adding more detail, so it may get larger

(note, the preview is slighlty zoomed/distorted):

Thanks, I don’t usually show my stuff cos I get bored and give up on it,

the proportions are off and I obviously have a LOT more detail to be putting in, but hey, it’s enjoyable,

that is brilliant, how do you go about starting that.

-I start off with a blank canvas the same size of my screen, 1280 x something or other,

    – I’ve made a custom brush that acts like a pencil, it’s 1px wide and has variable pressure due to how much I press on the graphics tablet I use

    – I block out the figure roughly with this, always working at 300% zoom, (don’t ask me why, It just feels better for me)

-I then block out the colours on a multiply layer so I can see the sketch through the colours

-then I change that to a normal layer and define the shape a bit more without the sketch underneath.

then I usually resize the pic and work over it again, I@ll probably resize another 2/3 times, as it’s on a layer on its own I can then do exactly the same with the rest of the pic independantly.

    early pic:

    big update from yesteday

not sure which direction to go witht he feathers on the top of it’s head, I think I’ll try and get it as realistic as possible on those, add some more colours apart from yellow/orange.

I’ve also run out of room at the bottom, but I can always just add more!, I love computer art.

as everyone else has said mate, great work!

    Cool ramj.

Can I ask if, and why you would prefer to do something like this, in a photo prog as opposed to a drawing prog.
Is it because its more like drawing with real media?

What will the final drawing be used for?

I use photoshop rather than Corel painter (the only alternative as far as I can see) because it’s the one I’m used to, Painter is superb for making things look and feel like real life media, however, I find photoshop is great for my methods and with customisation of the brushes etc you can almost recreate real life stuff with time.

then again I don’t really see it as trying to emulate real media,

Also, with photoshops latest incarnations it includes vector tools (or rather Vector-based raster tools) and although I like to not use the tools too much (IE I try to not undo or use levels/brightness etc) they are brilliant for getting a perfect curve (such as I’ve used on the bottom of the right eye to get that little bit of a white glint.

The image is just a bit of fun for me, chance to hone my skills and it’s something I enjoy, ie being meticulous about where the light should go etc helps me with my overall design skills, I may print it out eventually just for the sake of printing it.

Unfortunately the chances of me finishing this peice, like most of my pics, is very slim.

taken me about… 3 hours on and off??, I literally sat down and started sketching on photooshop, and it’s rare I like a sketch,

I must admit, the first design was actually meant to be a chocobo, which is off a final fantasy computer game, but that makes me sound like a right nerd.

so instead it’s going to be an adolescent chicken who’s jealous ’cause he’s a late developer.
