  • JetsterXL (Rockhopper2 64") Tips & Profile help?

Posted by noviceDan on July 25, 2005 at 2:37 pm

Hi all I am new to the printing and graphic industry, and have been doing it now for around a year. I have had lots of problems with my Rockhopper 2 which was renamed the JetsterXL by spandes who we purchased the printer from. We mainly have had problems with profiles. Does anyone have a profile for a transparent media which works well for the rockhopper2, and does anyone have a list of profiles and media which you have tried and have had good results from. I use Mistral for rip. If anyone has got any tips about the printer i would love for you to share them with me.
    Regards
    Dan

    Hi Dan,

The problem you are experiencing is very common. Spandex have sold you the printer, and they are also a media supplier. Why should they give you profiles, or even make it possible for you to get them for media that is sold by someone else. That just isn’t good business sense.

The other problem you will have is that while other manufacturers with have profiles that can be used on the Mutoh Rockhopper 2, they will normally be with a popular RIP that the ‘Mutoh’ is normally sold with like Onyx Postershop or Shiraz.

    I’m afraid there are three ways you can go;

    1) Get a proffesional profiler to sort out the media you want to use. (expensive and allow at lease one full day @ £600+ per day)

    2) Learn to profile yourself and get a cheap kit like the Gretag Macbeth i1 kit. (a good option but very time cunsuming)

    I hope this is helpful

    3) Change your RIP. If you get a copy of Onyx or Shiraz you will be able to use the Mutoh profiles perfectly as they use exactly the same ink, only difference is the lable on the cartridge or bottle. (Easiest option)

Thanks for that, i have emailed mutoh about which RIP software they make profiles for. I also wanted to ask what media supplier is best, as im using spandex as i got the machine from them.

    Hi Dan,

The person you need to speak to about software is Laura Mallot @ Artsystems.

Regarding media, there are lots of companies trying to get in on the act by reselling other manufacturers media (normally at higher than usual prices). I think the best way to do it is to select one or two suppliers who are known and respected manufatures such as Grafityp, Hexis or Metamark. There are others but these have the best ranges. Also, don’t be fooled about price, cheaper in terms of media, 95% of the time means lower quality.

    Darren.

Good advice given there by Darren.

Dan we provide profiles F.O.C. for any of our print medias (you can actually download them straight to your own pc).

Clear film not a problem, but like Darren has said we would need to know what rip you are using at the moment, then we could send you a sample to try.

we are using Mistral 10.0 from ergosoft ant the printer is a rockhopper 2. I need a clear film about 1375 wide, and a profile.

hi, i just browsed into the Shiraz FTP for profiles for Shiraz 6 for the Rockhopper2, I can see 140 of them from Avery MPI2000, Metamark MD5 to Vuflex 560 Banner.

    Hi Dave,

Be careful which ones you download, you may want to consult the companies that sell the media you want profiles for before downloading them. AIT aren’t the best at staying upto date, or creating top quality profiles.

hi Darren, interesting. We have a JV3 and the profiles we work with are very good and I would say they are very pantone accurate. We have worked with AIT to get some profile re-done and new ones added and I have to give them good credit for that. The reason why we went with AIT is their RIP, the quality is superb. However they are lacking in Hexis profiles at the moment, shame as they all seem old.

Have also found that a lot of the media companies don’t provide support for Shiraz RIP profiles, so we just try and stick to what is on the list.

    Hi Dave,

Just spoken to Dave @ Hexis and mentioned the profile situation (or lack of) on Shiraz. He assures me that he is working closely with AIT and profiles are now available for the JV3 with Colorpainter & Rockhopper to follow.

    Cheers

    Darren
