JAC Vinyl and general eBay rant
Posted by Paul Humble on February 17, 2009 at 8:34 pmHas anyone else ever used or heard of JAC vinyl? I had a customer in today wanting to boy racer his Clio with some stripes and graphics he bought off eBay. Honest ive never seen anything like it, ive not been going long but even my very first attempts at applying app tape was better than this, creases were everywhere, not only in the app tape but also the vinyl itself.
The stuff just felt crappy too, and ive never heard of it so I thought id ask (im assuming its a budget vinyl).
Grand total for his eBay purchase – £11!!
Fitting cost – £50
Ive a feeling he will be back to get better ones supplied and fitted.

Paul you assume wrong Jac vinyl top end is really nice vinyl, cuts weeds and applies like a dream 🙄 haven’t used it much had some samples though.

Hi Paul, we use JAC for some of our work, I quite like it, also use Mactac etc, we tend to buy most of our stuff from APS who tend to specialise in a few makes of vinyl.
There are different types of JAC so my bet is that he’s got the cheapest monomeric they do, which is very poor.
That’ll teach him!!!

Ill get the code tomorrow from the backing paper, it just didnt like curves at all.
-
From memory I think the good stuff is called seri sign, not sure about the monomeric one.

You will probably find that the "FleaBayer" has bought some old vinyl (end of roll/off cuts or time expired) and is selling it on, through his "pucka Chinese" plotter with Full version of signlab!!!!

It was a really poor job Graeme, the O in Clio was shocking, it was jagged and all over the place.

Paul, Jac vinyl as mentioned is a decent grade vinyl which is made by avery dennison. Its just as good as avery so if you were finding it hard to work with it was probably old stuff. Although I tend not to use jac.

I’m sorry James but it’s not as good as Avery, that’s like saying TATA is as good as a JAG, same company totally different product.

Never heard of JAC but you all know how I feel about Avery.
😉
Let me get this straight, he brought the pre-made stripes and graphics for you to apply?
I think I would offer him a better deal using your own stuff but charged him triple to apply his FleaBay crap.

He didnt buy specifically for me to fit, he bought them intending to fit them himself but bottled it.

When I served my apprenticeship, in screen printing, we printed alot of stickers – people who paid good money got fasson vinyl, and people who cut corner got jac vinyl. It was always the cheaper option. Saying that – i’ve never heard of fasson being mentioned on the boards. :lol1:

Jebus! FASSON!
My dad and me used to fit that stuff here, came from England ready printed…..may have been you John!…..ye bustard! (hot) (hot) I hated the stuff…. 😀 😀 -
JAC, like most vinyls from any manufacturer comes in various grades.
Typically SERICAL & SERISIGN…the serisign is a better grade and weeds, & applies OK. It’s not by any means a ‘premium’ vinyl, but is OK as a general use 5year.
Have used it on occasions, but I just don’t like the feel of it – and it’s slight reluctance to adhere to the application tape (or the other way round).
Besides – there are better vinyls out there for the same sort of money.
However, their digital media is actually quite good and offers excellent value for money 🙂

I now use JAC vinyl all the time now. I use the Serisign range which is polymeric, rated at 5-8 year. I used to use Multifix but JAC is much softer and easier to weed, I’ve tried other manufacturers but I find JAC to be quite as good in terms of cutting and weeding, and from what I’ve seen of vans I’ve done durability is equal or better. Now if only Victory can sort out their hap hazard accounts system where special prices don’t stick I would be well happy.

Use it here all the time, good gloss and colour range, very easy to weed and no application problems !

a local "sign maker" came to us with some to fit on to 4 merc sprinters and it was the worse vinyl ive ever used, was a very cheap 70p/mtr roll of guff..on the other hand 5yr jac vinyl is very good..
Its not a brand problem just a very cheap vinyl
-
JAC Serisign is exactly the same as Avery 600 series. All good stuff, but when you can get the Avery cheaper than the JAC, why does it exist? 😕
-
Gwaredd i doubt very much its the exact same product.
i haven’t used JAC, but i have Avery. Avery has a massive reputation worldwide, where JAC doesn’t. My personal view on it is that JAC was kept on as the budget end of Avery’s vinyls. Avery didnt start manufacturing JAC they bought over the company JAC and kept the line. -
I think you’re probably right Rob. My take on materials is if I pay 50% extra I expect the product to be at least 60% better, in my experience I can easily pay more for another brand and it be no better at all.

I seem to recall that JAC is the same face film as Avery, but different adhesive and liner.

The JAC serisign vinyl was the old Avery 700 series. Avery bought the company JAC mainly for its paper side, & to shift the old vinyl & introduce the JAC brand, they created the JAC vinyl range & re-branded their own vinyl meaning the old Avery 700 series became the new 600 series we have today, old 800 the new 700 & so on.
As far as I know, because all of the old 700 series has gone long ago, it’s the new 600 series you get on a roll of JAC serisign. This would make sense, as you can get the Avery 600 cheaper than the JAC serisign & why would Avery make another 5-7 year film exclusively for JAC when they already have one?
Either way, the JAC & Avery 5-7 year vinyl is great. In the 10 years I’ve been using them, I’ve never had a problem with either – so whichever one you buy, it’s a good vinyl. Certainly better than the Oracal & Mactac equivalent IMO.
