  • It’s a good week!!

Posted by Martin Cole on August 12, 2008 at 2:29 pm

Just over a year after being diagnosed with cancer (Hodgkin’s lymphoma) my wife Esther has been told she is now in remission 😀
They never seem to use the words all clear 😕 She will undergo check ups for the next ten years, so I guess will be well looked after.

The past year has been hell, we have been in and out of hospitals more times than you would ever want to in a lifetime. The Chemotherapy treatment was awful, every two weeks for six months. With 3 wks of Radiotherapy following this.

My business had just hung on in there, with all the stress of things.
To top things off my Dad passed away very unexpectedly a few weeks ago, he really bonded with Esther while she was being treated for her illness. It’s a real shame he wasn’t around for the good news.

The moral of this is that life is just so fragile, we are just a normal family with 2 young children, thinking things like this happened to other people.

We all moan about work, and general everyday things, it’s not until something like this happens to someone very close or you visit a hospital and see what some people are going through you realise life is not so bad after all. I met a lot of people being treated for cancer, some of who will probably not come through, it sure does change your perspective on life.

Finally I would like to thank the board members who have kept in regular contact with me over the past year with a massive thanks to Shane, (the guy has a wonderful way with words) also to Lynn, Marcella as well as Graeme who has been through the same situation with Morgandi, and all others, I thank you it made such a difference.

    Here’s to a better year

It’s weird how you can be genuinely happy for someone you have never met but your post made me feel good about life Martin….it’s funny how forums like this bring people together in that way.

I’m sure your going to cherish everyday you have together…

    All the best

    Martin,

I have a 19 year old friend with exactly the same and he is only on month 3 of the treatment, you know better than I do what he is going through but I prey he gets the same result.

In the mean time information about others winning there fights can only help to bring new hope.

    Russell.

Although like many others I never knew, I would like to give you both my very heartfelt and sincere best wishes.

Being given a note of remission is a sigh of relief for you both and the wee ones. Don’t dwell on the what if…keep looking forward and never stop loving each other.

I went through a similar set of treatments many years ago and my 10 years of checks were up over 5 years ago…proof that these unpleasant treatments can work long term…these days it barely crossed my mind, but I am so very happy that others like Esther (and you) can be free to live their lives and put such dark days behind them too.

Hey Martin, I am pleased you found some comfort in the support offered by some of the members here.

Grief is an emotion that can be very destructive for all concerned. Expressing your fears and anxiety to a hearing hear is a simple thing, but an important ingredient in the overall healing process.

Really pleased that Esther is in remission though.

Well done to you both. Give your kids a hug from me too. They must be happy to have mum on the road to recovery.

Could I just say, I am over whelmed, thankyou for all your kind words,
Esther read this last night and was really touched.

David R, your a shining example that people do get through these things
it’s just awfull the treatment makes you so ill, to ultimately get you better.

As I said just a few on the boards knew and I do thank them for their support.

Below are a couple of pictures of Esther and the children, one before the illness and the second taken on Monday.
In between these she virtually lost all her hair and didn’t look her best as she would say.

    Many Thanks

    Martin
