  • Issues with Hexpress Vinyl pulling out of Sprinter Recess

Posted by BenRead on September 24, 2010 at 8:15 am

    Morning all,

Just looking to see what we are doing wrong here!?

We are putting graphics as attached on a mercedes sprinter wrapped round the side and back, where the graphics go into the recess, they are lasting barely a day before starting to pull out.

    60 plate sprinters..

We clean all panels with solvents, ensuring there is no dirt, then heat into recesses, and then really heat them up.

Should i be using a specific material for these deep recesses on sprinters?

What cleaning fluid should i be using?1

I’m lost as to whats going wrong!

    Any help would be appreciated

I don’t know anything about hexpress vinyl but you need to be using a good cast material for this, calendered will never stay in there!

I have used Hexpress a few times but not in a sprinter recess, I found it must be heated over 90degrees for it to stay in, if not heated or not heated enough it will pop out with in 24hrs.

Other than that it works for me on transit recesses etc but as I said not tried on sprinters which are bad.

    cheers

I’d stick with a non-bubble free material on any van recesses.

Ben, most colour change vinyl is not suitable for deep receses, (never used hexis though) but if you use it it must be post heated to very high temps. and then give it a second bedding down with a damp felt sqeequee, or a 3m roller.
As for cleaning use rapid prep, then isoprop folowed by an etching panel wipe around the recess.
but looking at your picture, why not feed the vinyl in rather than streching it?

Had a similar problem recntly, but not with air release, the recess on the sprinter were Ok it was the around the wheel arch that popped.
redone as describe above, all good so far

    Hi
From past experience we have found sprinters with recesses with a stipple Finnish can be problematic.

This can be compounded by heating to high temps as the material that gives the stipple effect can leach silicone through the paint.

We have com-batted this in the past by cleaning as described by peter then heating the recess up to a high temperature then cleaning again before fitting.

I also would be very skeptical about using a bubble free vinyl in a deep recess.

I hope this helps in some way .. Rob

Phone Hexis tech support and let them know whats happening,
They were great helping me get the correct wrap materials sorted

Gave it a good clean with some new products too..

Ben, just out of interest when you post heat the vinyl do you use a thermometer at all or do you just heat it until you think it’s about cooked?

Reason I ask is that I now use a laser thermometer all the time when doing any sort of work with recesses. When I first got it I tried the old heat it till its about right method to see how accurate I was and I was surprised just how far out I was some of the time.

Yep! i got one off of flea-bay 1/3 the price of some of the signage Sellers. well worth the £15 investment and exactly the same models as a couple of well know sellers on this forum.
Sometimes flea-bay does have it’s uses
