  • Is this Helvetica?

Posted by Marcella Ross on April 17, 2007 at 10:08 am

Is it???? thought it was helvetica bold. It could be but just been tweaked a little, the spacing is a bit off and the ‘S’ looks a little squished.

    What do you think?

Looks like its just stretched up a bit… would be better to have a straight on pic though.

    Nick.

The ‘C’ is different in Arial, I’d looked at that earlier.
Here it is with my version in helvetica beside it ……….. I’ve adjusted all the spacing so it’s the same ………… but the ‘S’ and the ‘C’ still look a bit different don’t they?????

What makes me think it’s Arial is the angle on the end of the C, I can make Arial C fit over it exactly. Maybe Im wrong.

My Helvetica 55 Roman Bold is close.
There is many variants of Helvetica.

I thought the C was Arial as well…I just completed seven 4’x6′ park rules signs with it in 1" lettering (client specified), and I didn’t like the Cs or some of the numbers because of the crooked-looking ends.

Harry, it’s maybe the picture but the angle on the end of the c in Arial is a sharper angle than that on the sample I have……. it’s almost but not quite straight on the sample here.

Dave…… I’ll have a look at that one (if I have it)

    thanks

Dave could you attached the words
    Fife SCOTTISH
in that version of helvetica for me as an ai and I will have a close look at it??? I don’t have that font.
It would be a help thanks.

It’s also possible that it is Arial but it’s a manipulated ‘C’ as the ‘S’ looks better.

Marcella, it may be triumvirate (not sure if spelling is right) which is a flexi font very similar to Helvetica/Ariel. I will have a look on my other computer and see.

yeh….I see that Marcella….probably is something else…..must be a very discerning customer 😀 or are you being a perfectionist again??

Harry, suffice to say the customer is a bus enthusiast 😕 and spends loads of time and money on old out of service buses ………. just to keep and look at and take out once in a blue moon! But the replacement of the graphics has to be exactly as they were years ago.

I doubt they’d noticed tiny irregularities in the text, I mean it’s minimal. But I thought I’d see if someone here could nail it first.

You have my sympathy Marcella, I do loads of old bus lettering and they can be a little fussy to say the least. Sometimes over the silliest bit’s.

Just got a crest to recreate, I was handed a fuzzy photo and a tracing of the old one (knackered) and he said "that’ll be simple for you to do won’t it Steve?" 🙄

    Steve

P.S. Not sure of the font either, I’ve seen it quite a few times but never been able to match it. best I’ve done is tweek Helvetica or Arial

This is quite interesting to read http://www.ms-studio.com/articlesarialsid.html

Never knew the history of these two typefaces, seems Microsoft ‘tweaked’ Helvetica and called it Arial.

If we ‘tweaked’ a Microsoft programme I wonder what would happen?? 😀

just had a look at that …………. it’s close but not heavy enough and folio bold is too bold.
here’s a better view of the text (as requested by Nick 😀 )

Marcella, do you realize that you have spent the last 7 hours faffing with this font and you could have edited it in a few minutes.

    Is it me???????? 😕

Mike/Shane, thats very true, it would only have taken a few minutes for Marcella to edit the font she already had but it wouldn’t have been any where as much fun as having all of us scurrying around trying to find an exact match for her :lol1:
