is there a vinyl suitable for an outside canopy?
Posted by Tim Hobbs on August 24, 2007 at 12:52 pmHi Guys
Does anyone know if there exists a vinyl that would be suitable for a canopy outside of a shop that is rolled up every day?
I.E. one that is VERY flexible.I don’t think banner vinyl would be up for it and I don’t really want to signwrite the logo by hand. Although it might be nice to get back to my roots for a change!
Cheers
Tim

if its a canvas canopy ide say definitely not mate…
brushes would be best i think…

Yeah, you’re probably right Rob.
Bring out the One Shot Soft-side! -
i recon a cast would do the trick mate but i think it depends just how squashed it gets when closed. ide imagine it would be fine though.
worst comes to worst on the vinyl canopy you could create a vinyl stencil and paint it in then remove stencil. -
Hexis have come out with a new hi bond vinyl, this may be better

Thanks Ian
I guess we could always contact them for a Fact Sheet on the product.

its a hi bond vinyl for sticking to the likes of motor cycles and wheelie bins, not the usuall thick stuff, going to order a sample from them next week

The only roller blind/canopies I’ve come across were made from the same material as curtain sides for lorries and consequently the same problems. Best bet vinyl screen inks and a brush

Ask John Harding, I know he used textile vinyl on a canopy without any problems, I cannot recall what the canopy was made of though.

If you don’t feel comfortable signwriting the blind or using a vinyl stencil with ink, the APA truck vinyl should be a viable alternative – have done a lot of PVC Canopies over the years with no come backs at all.

Yip… i agree craig, i never thought of truck vinyl… that would do the job no problems.

I did a job similar to this – the problem was the canopy was stitched to the frame so although I could remove the frame I couldnt take it away in my van hence I used heat press material from graphityp and just ironed on on site.
Client understood this was not guaranteed as the material normally goes on with a heat press so she was happy to sign my disclaimer 😀
Turned out ok although very slight lifting the edges where I didnt get the heat spot on – practice makes perfect!
If truck vinyl works it might be better from the rolling up aspect
will post a pic elsewhere
here unless moved

for durability i dont think you could go wrong with the one shot soft side …or sericol screen ink…which drys a bit quick but years ago in the late seventies i seem to remmember my boss using siricol on the first curtain siders
