  • is signlab thermal module worth the upgrade?

Posted by Jom on August 12, 2003 at 11:39 pm

    Hey,

I’m curious if anyone has used the Signlab Thermal module and your impressions of it. As a Signlab user, is it a worthwhile upgrade?

I’m mostly curious for those that use a lot of foils and spot colors as well as process.

    Thanks,

    Jon

    Yep, I`ve got it.

Had the edge for about 3 months. It came with omega, but i took an instant dislike to it. Maybe I didn`t give it enough time! But I was a SL user already, so it was an easy step to make.

    It`s fantastic.

Tony from Coxes, did the install, I got a days training in with the price.

From day one I felt at home with it. Not used it to the full protential yet. I also have “eye candy” which has some great effects.

I would recomend it to all.

I just hope I`ll be as good as good with the edge, as the guys from the edge forum. ( that Bob G, he`s my hero) 😛

    Jon,

I realize you’re new to this and other boards, so I want to give full disclosure in attempt to eliminate any possible display of impropriety with my response. I was involved with the Thermal module during the development and subsequent release, and continue to be involved as an authorized reseller and trainer/instructor on the entire CADlink product line. That being said and out of the way….

Yes, I have used the Thermal module and am quite impressed by it. My direct experience with the product has mainly been concentrated around the Edge/Edge 2 devices, but have been exposed to Roland CC owners as well. Both groups benefit from the Thermal module compared to other software that is available, however, “I” believe Edge based machines probably benefit more so then CC based devices.

One of the benefits I here from CC owners is the ability to produce multiple spot color graphics easier then with the “native” software and driver. You also have some halftone control that I believe is not present with other products. And I “think” you might actually be able to achieve a higher LPI output compared to other software.

And as Kev points out, if you’re already a SL user, learning the “thermal” module is sooooo much easier then learning a completely new package in addition to “thermal” stuff.

If interested, drop me an email with mailing details I can provide you with a working demo copy. You won’t be able to do actual output from the software, but it will allow you to get up close and personal with it. And a sample print can be done from the demo CD media that was generated from SL, again, just not able to generate it from the working demo. You could also come down to Orlando, FL for the Sign Business show next week/weekend and sit in on a two day seminar series I’ll be presenting on behalf of CADlink. Or take a trip to Long Beach, CA next month for a repeat of the same class. I did present a SignLab class here in Harrisburg at the beginning of July and may repeat with another one before the year is out. There was more intrest then seats available, so a waiting/contact list was created if I do in fact do another one here in Harrisburg. I’ll put you on “the list” if interested.
