  • is signlab taking over to run the edge?

Posted by Kevin.Beck on July 3, 2003 at 7:20 am

Just thought I`d let other members know of something whats happening at the moment.

A month before Sign UK, Spandex`s rep came to see me to demo the Edge. Fantastic machine, no complates at all with it.

The problem I`m having is with the software. I had heard rumours that Spandex were just about to offer Signlab to run the edge. Great I thought, I use SL, I`d only have to learn the thermal side of the program.

The rep told me, I could choose which software to run the edge, Omega or SL. He added that because SL wasn`t being launched till the Sign UK show, I would have to have Omega, then swop over to SL after the launch. AT NO EXTRA COST.

    NO problem, I thought.

So after the show, rang the rep to enquire when I can swop over. He told me he didn`t know when Spandex were getting the software in, and he`d ring me when he found out.

3 weeks late, no call from him. So I rang Spandex to find out whats happening. After 3-4 calls where I was told someone would get back to me, but never did. I was evenually put through to the software manager, who told me he would ring me when he found out something.

4 days later I get a letter from him, saying, yes Signlab was ready for launching, and the cost would be £1700.

I tried to ring him on his number, to find out why the cost when I`d been told something completely differant, left 3 messages in 3 days but no reply.

The rep eventually phoned me, left me hanging in mid air with certain things he said. Will phone him today to find out more.

Got no beef about the machine at all.

But Spandex, you are a multi million pound company. Get your act together. Don`t tell your reps one thing, then change it. I FACT, GET YOUR STORYS RIGHT. I`m being told various storys by the company and the rep

Are you not legally bound to honour what the rep has told me, isn`t that whats called a verbal contract…

If I quote a job out, thats the price, if I b@lls up, I have to eat it.

Sometimes I`m amazzed of some companys working practices..

Just an add on to the above.

Spandex you want an extra £1700 to upgrade from Omega to Signlab.

Your competitor “Cox`s” are offering Signlab with the thermal modual, which supports the all the other foil manufacturers, + a “designer” version of the same. + I can keep Omega as well.

    ALL FOR THE SAME PRICE-£1700

A customer of ours had a demo on the Edge just before Sign UK. He was also told before Sign UK that if he bought it then they would upgrade him with the thermal module free when they could, as he already uses Signlab. & wanted to stick with it. I did recommend to him that he got it in writing. In the ended he decided on a PC600, sounds like a good job he did otherwise he would have been in the same boat as you 🙁

They also told him that he really should buy a new PC from them as well? Even though his existing PC is more than adequate for the job 😕

I think you will find the offer of a free designer expired on June 30th Becky 🙁

…I had a demo for the Edge II at my place at the beginning of the year and I found the actual rep’ the most objectionable, arrogant and patronising person I’ve met in a long long time…turned me right off them, their machine and the whole Spandex experience!

    more soon

Over here you could get a “cross-grade” from Signlab if you already owned a “real” software package like GA or Omega, or Flexi etc.

I did it a couple of years ago and I think it cost £800 or thereabouts, that was for Signlab Colormaster 5, I then upgraded to E6 when it came out. You kept your existing package.

I have never really got into Signlab, I am sure its great, I wanted another station, but tend to use my Omega, have had Gerber software for 11 years….the devil you know i suppose.

For Edge jobs other than decals etc I play around in Photoshop and then take it back as a tiff.

haven’t had a chance to see the Signlab thermal module.

£1700 seems abit steep after what they had said to you and in view of what they have offered previously.

Just add… whats the cost in the UK for just the thermal module?

The Thermal module is £750 here Henry. I would guess it’s a similar price there?

    Becky:

I mentioned this post (and the other on 4EDGEtalk.com) to a colleague of mine at Spandex a few days ago. He was aware of your situation and believed that a solution was in progress.

Has the situation been resolved to your satisfaction?

Just to let you know, that Spandex have now agree`d to exchange Omega for SL at no extra cost.

Thankyou Jon if it was down to you, you`re a star.

Thankyou Spandex and Gerber for honouring what the rep said.

    becky.

Thanks “WP” but I can’t really take any of the credit.

By the time I mentioned Kevin’s situation to a colleague, Spandex was already in the process of sorting it out…

Good to hear the news that you were sorted out by Spandex, Kevin
I suppose we have to pat them on the back for resolving the situation.

    Spandex? huh what a joke.

I phoned Spandex ages ago regarding financing a brand new gerber edge package, software, everything.
I was told someone would phone me back immediately.

It was over two months before they got back to me.
fortunately as they left a message on the answerphone I ignored them
they lost about £15K + the finance commission as I bought elsewhere.

You can tell the sales department don’t work for themselves.

Just though I`d post an update.

As you know Spandex came up trumps and said I could swap over to SL FOC.

This happened just as we learnt that my parnter had to go in hospital and would be off work for 3 months.

So I had to look round for someone to cover her. Easy said than done.

Her job is mostly admin and the embroidery side. So first I tried to get cover for her, no luck.

So I looked to get someone to cover me(screenprinting and graphics), got loads of replys.(I would then do her job)
The only problem was the edge, people could work it, but only using the Omega software.
So after all that agro I stuck with the Omega, so the chap covering can do edge work…….

But having had a demo of the new signlab e6 thermal module, I was hooked. I rang Cox`s and ordered it aswell.

Tony Winterbottom, did the install and training. Great job Tony. The service from Cox`s and yourself was second to none. The training went so well, that 1hr after Tony left, I got a job for the edge. 3 colours onto clear, with a white flood. Compleated the job in no time. With no mistakes.

The thermal module from SL is so easy to use. I would recomend it to anyone with the edge. Also hats off to Tony & Cox`s, great service.

ps. Tony`s also available for demo`s on Sat Nav…….. 😀

thanks for the compliment Kev, and the tea 😉
let me know when you have bought the sat nav, I’ll call them for commision 😆
rob your right, tons of edge demo’s and installation have kept me from
the sign boards, Im going to make an effort to at least check in once a week though,(in case Kev needs some late night SL support)
