is it against the law to put magnetics onto moving vehicles?
Posted by Leon Winslade on January 18, 2008 at 4:48 pmHi Hope you all had a good Xmas’s and my year.
Can any one help me? I`am quoting for some Magnetic vinyl sign (e.g. taxi door signs). I have not used it for a while and I have herded roomers that it cannot be used on moving vehicles and will soon be law!! . Can any one fill me and/or have information on it thanks.

I have been in the sign game 11 years but I have not used the magnetic for a while. I heard this from a Friend how mite be been looking to selling it as a new product, He ask me what I thought of the product which is a good product. he also told me that some company’s have mentioned to him that it could be band. I Last used in around 2004 when SWFC was playing at Cardiff & I put the logo on front of his mini, bus which it came off on the M1. What do you all think. (hot) (chat.)

Leon I would never advise magnetics to be used on the front of a vehicle.

i don’t think its such a daft thing to ask guys.
i have been in the same game over 16 years now. although not many, in that time i have had some of my own customers say they loss the mag panels on the motorways. i have also had allot of folk buying them say they need replacements for ones they have bought from other sign companies and have blown off on the motorways.personaly, i blame that on how the panel has been treat or how it has been applied.
we all know if you leave a panel folded over it leaves an impression on the panel. this making it hard to stay flat when applied to a van/car. if a panel is dog-eared and fitted to a van, the wind will of course, whip it of in seconds at certain driving speeds.
there are also folk that cross recesses with panels or cross slight moldings with the panel. again, giving a channel for the wind to ride up and whip it off…all relevant arguments but at the end of the day, if it blows off and land s on another cars windscreen, you will have a pile-up on your hands. lives lost etc sounds extreme i know… but still, it "could" happen. if it does… the possible myth just could become law?

I’ve always tried to talk my customers out of using magnetics i think because they are temporary and removable i think it makes the company using them look fly by nights only my opinion
i was also told by an old sign guy years ago and i have to say that i haven’t seen this myself but if there is a bit of rust the material makes things worse because it creates a magnetic field supposedly
i have noticed water also gets trapped behind them so maybe that’s where the theory comes from another point if they are being removed and replaced you have to make sure there is no grit on the back as the vibration could also cause scratching/ rust i just don’t like them
the thing i use them most for are trade plates the garages love them -
what i think you heard is that some councils will not allow magnetics anymore on taxis. private hire ones

Leon, I’ve been told that Huddersfield, Newcastle and Stoke Councils have all stopped the use of magnetics on taxi’s and private hire vehicles. Why not call your council offices and ask to speak to The Hackney Carriage Officer for clarification on Livery for Private Hire Vehicles and Taxi’s in your area.

I SOLD QUITE A BIT OF MAGNETIC ON EBAY LAST YEAR, WITH NO PROBLEMS EXCEPT FOR ONE, I SUPPLIED A 1.5 METRE PIECE TO GO ON A VAN IN DEVON AND WITHIN 6 MONTHS IT WAS BUBBLING, I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND DOING MAGNETICS ANY BIGGER THAN A3, OR I THINK THEY COULD COME OFF AND CERTAINLY KNACKER UP ANYWAY WHEN THE CUSTOMER, BENDS, FOLDS THEM, DROPS THEM AND DISCO DANCES ON THEM!

When we supply magnetic signs to our customer we always put in a photo copy disclaimer from our supplier on where you can and can’t use it. One of these being traveling at high speed.
