  • is a race-car possible to wrap?

I have to change the colour/design on my race sidecar as the guy I bought it off wants his design back. Paint spraying quote was £350 (think he thought I was Jensen Button). Then I thought why not wrap it in solid colour then I can add vinyl myself to my own design. I have never wrapped anything (only cut and applied vinyls) but I have a friend who can. Is this a practical idea or a complete no no due to the more complex shape? If its a goer what is the best vinyl to use ? If i knew how to add a pic I would!

I would think you be better spraying it then wrapping it, im thinking that it has a big curving contour shape to it. If you do it your self, rub it back with some 600 then 800 and get 1 ltr 2pack some reducer and hardner. Would not think should cost you more then £50. Keep your air down so you dont get too much over spray. This might not be the best time of the year to do it out side. normaly go’s off in 10 to 15 min.

i would probably say "get it sprayed" wrapping "is" an option and if you had the experience needed you would save a fair bit.
having no experience and from what you have said. difficult shape. ide guess you will loss allot of vinyl due to trial and error. even then, i doubt you will have it fitted 100% to get away with it looking like its sprayed.
another thing, its a side car. i would guess it gets allot of knocks and scuffs? also, graphics like "numbers" etc changed allot?
if you scuff the vinyl its not really something you could patch/touch up without joins showing.
also, the graphics are vinyl onto vinyl. "difficult to remove without damaging the base vinyl, if it has a good bond."
the wrap itself isnt expensive, but you do have a minimum amount when purchasing.

Thanks for the replies, I will probably have a go at spraying myself then but was worried about overspray allover my workshop and the temperature at this time of year.

i agree on the temperature side of things… the paint tends to bloom in cold weather… over spray you gotta love 😕

I’m still painting cars outside! even in this weather it’s possible.

I just keep my heat gun going all the time as i spray, the lacquer is the hardest part, but if you take it slow it’s should be ok.

you may get away with painting celly outside and some anti bloom thinners but 2k will take ages to flash off

local repairs are fine this time of year but i would not do a large amount like this
prep it all up your self and ask a local body shop to just pull the trigger in there booth
i would have charged you about £150 including paint
this would take 50 mins to paint and 35 to bake job done

or try to save money and waste money on materials in the long run
on the other hand £350 is not out the way

I already prepared and flatted it all, just wanted one solid mid blue color blowing over. The guy was supposed to be a friend of a friend. Didn’t need to match anything that’s why I thought maybe wrap it. Managed to load it as my avatar so you can see roughly what shapes involved, only the fairing and wheel arch (seat is already solid blue).

£350 for paint on a fairing alone, eeek! :o, that’s half my yearly race budget! I just use a part sheet of (hand painted) ally or white poly for my fairings and put the graphics straight onto that. Mind you I do go though 4 or 5 a season as I tend to use them as a bulldozer to move other bikes out of the way or by giving their passenger a shove and making them run wide 😀 . There again road racing is a different game from grasstrack and speedway. Nice to see another sidecar racer on here though, I hope all goes ok you this year.

it would be so much quicker to paint than wrap

if this is as you say ready to go mask it all and deliver to a paint shop there is no way they would not blow this over for max £150-200 and one colour

this can be painted is 2k solid no laquer cheap paint like max meyer 2k £25 per lt plus 1/2 lt hardner 10% thinners and happy days shame your not down this way
