  • iPhone PDF Proofs reliable?

    Ok as we move further into moderm gadget world, our calibrated (cough) monitors and printers are all working fairly close to each other but here is the new problem.

    This week we proofed a customer their proof with vehicle outline with a design with a dark blue to lighter blue fade , the request was "for a fade". So we sent over the proof customer looks on his iPhone and then tells us to go ahead (and pays).

    BUT we did everything right, we went ahead and applied a strip to the car and the fade look weak but overall job looked good. The PDF Proof that we sent was pretty good match. BUT NO it was NOT as the iPhone PDF Reader apparently made it go Dark Blue to a Royal Blue (like the o2 logo background).

    Oh my god, we eventually gave in as we decided that the customer was not happy and re-did the fade at quite a cost in the end for Two vehicles.

    Lesson learnt, new Gadgets/Devices may not show colours as intended! how can we know that a PDF is actually showing the colours correct as there is a lot of chinese branded crap out there as well.

    Proofs now need a disclaimer saying "printed proofs available at request as colours may not show up as intended".

    good point Dave

    just done a box trailer prints and insisted the customer came to see a test print as he was working from his ipad.
    before i send a pdf for proof i always check it on a normal type computer (uncalibrated) just to see if all looks about right.

    We had the same problem a few weeks ago with a pain in the rear customer who proofed the lot on his iphone saying it was nothing like what he wanted so I got him to come in and see it on our monitor turns out it was fine but the proof he had didn’t show half the colour our monitor did. We’ve started now printing a small proof and getting it signed off before we run anything.

    oh so a few of us fallen for it… thank you for Adobe for messing up the App! we all know that the Apple products have good screens

    Dave, I think it is a very good point to raise for everyone to give some thought too, but…

    WTF… are you letting a customer hold you to the a visual based on a phone mate? Tell them to "get real"….
    monitor calibration etc etc is bad enough, but if they are so particular and "on the ball" they should equally be responsible for colour matching etc…

    can you imagine the old B&Q scenario?
    give them anything to scan and match… they call you and you look at the match on your own "mobile, ipad, phone or whatever" then you wonder in saying sorry its not exact to my phone???? no chance…
    as professionals, we all need to get real in our practice, but equally, we need to educate and dictate what customers dictate to us as far as needs are concerned.

    wasn’t my decision in the end… a few percent difference is fair enough but ‘extreme’ change is not.
