iPhone advice please
hi all,
been offered an iphone 3g 8gb for not a lot of money by a guy i fish with, i know little about them, the price is good for a phone which is only a few months old (been looking at ebay prices),
how easy is it to get these unlocked to other networks?
are they fully compatible with pc’s?
is the only difference between the 3gs and the 3g the storage size and the camera stuff? it’s more about having an organiser / easy web access when mobile, fed up with trying to do it from my mobile!
don’t so much need it for the camera as i got a good one,
my 40gig mp3 collection is always with me (car or pc), don’t need it elsewhere!
should i be thinking about anything else?i know i’m about 3 years behind you lot but figured i’d give it a go after yet another ‘smart’ phone has proved itself to be anything but smart!

currently been testing out the networks in my area, see what is capable of hi-speed broadband… but… without the unlimited data allowance your at risk of going over it.. .then again my experiments with pay as u go broadband has been good so far.
the thing that i dislike about the iphone is the sealed battery… ur stuffed for new ones.

You’re all mad. The iPhone is the tool. 😀
Although I would the the first to admit that it helps a lot if you are Apple based in the first place. However, I’ll say no more about it, other than to suggest that you speak to Mr. Mindham, a previously steadfast PC user who, having seen what I can do, is now so convinced that he is buying an Apple laptop to complement his new iPhone.
iPhones are fully compatible with PCs Hugh, but you will benefit greatly by downloading iTunes and iPhoto to your PC from the Apple website. Both are free.
The big difference between the 3g and 3gs is processor speed. There’s nothing wrong with 3g, but 3gs is so much better. It’s one those cases where you don’t notice the difference until you go backwards, and use a 3g after a 3gs.

i know im mad john, im working on an imac everyday and im changing totally over to mac when im a wee bit more solvent :hung:
i honestly hate going home to pc’s especially to the smaller viewing, and i just love the small keyboard but ive went thru two mice…..dont ask me why 🙄 anyway im bletherin now and totally off topic :lol1: -

Remote Desktop with multitouch… simply amazing, work anywhere with a decent connection
also i have tested Remote desktop on laptop over 3G to my office and works well, so should be good on the HD2

why would you want a remote desktop top use on a mobile phone? 😕
you see how clumsy it is to work with in the video… can you seriously see you sitting in a cafe typing up quotes, a letter, or perhaps designing in photoshop or signlab?
mobile phones have many great uses, the main ones being contact. phone/emails/quick-internet referencing etc but not actually "working from". at least not for me anyway…
my blackberry synqs with my google business account, calendars, contacts etc etc… does everything i need it to and more.
dont get me wrong, i do like the i-phone etc im not knocking it here at all, just the remote desktop thingy is a bit much Dave. as i said, just my view on it of course. bit like having an ashtray on your motorbike. 😛

Do take on board the bad comments… At the end of the day a phone is a phone and doesnt need a megamega pixel camera. I’ve had one for nearly 2 years and its the best phjone i have had. Easy to jailbreak (ie to unlock even at the latest version) Ive tried a vodaphone sim in mine and works a treat but better to be on o2 as you get the unlimited 3g

You’re right in that respect Rob, you wouldn’t want to write a novel on a phone, but the iPhone keyboard is good, with it’s variable size keys. Lots less typing mistakes. In fact I can’t wait for the day when they bring out a full size version for use with a desk top machine.
And what’s wrong with an ashtray on a motorbike? Surely you don’t expect me to just flick the dog ends at other road users? Much though some of them deserve it. 😀

on my laptop away from the office i use remote desktop all the time as I have no data whatsoever related to the business on my laptop and to be honest i was in scotland the other week and i took my laptop with me, to be honest I wont need it next time. Remote working is very much here and with the screen resolution its very workable, thing is they should have showed it in landscape then it will feel much better and it is a full exchange platform, my contacts will always be sync’d up. I know the iphone has a lot of this, but iphone is not windows, then again we have Google Android 2, which is also something to shout about.
With regards typing, well i see the iphone for typing and its pretty good and HTC have copied it, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem. With a 1Ghz processor it certainly is a mini PC and thats why the damn thing is so sought after, sold out!
My only worry is battery life, with all that going on I suspect it will drain quick every day lol. But its a gadget!

dave if you need that sorta access to work, you need to get a wee netbook… they are brill. very light. you can run pc-anywhere, laplink or whatever with it…

I had Blackberry Pearl, then Blacberry Storm and hated them both.
Ive now got a HTC Touch Diamond 2 and its a top piece of kit.

i dont need a netbook when i have a laptop and when the mobile has 800×480 res screen, thats awesome! might need an appointment with specsavers which is likelky to cost more then the phone
Turns out the HD2 vodafone deal is now changed, argh! might not be getting it afterall

I wouldn’t say I was that far behind everyone else with technology generally but when it comes to phones all I want is something that rings when someone calls me and is capable of storing a few contact numbers. My kids keep telling me to get a new phone but the half brick I have does all that I need it to.

I am so impressed with my iPhone I bought a few months ago, I just ordered an iMac. The iPhone is a wonderful piece of technology, very intuitive and full of innovations. After years of PC’s, I’m sick of "tinkering". I want productivity. After I’ve used it for a bit, I’ll report back.

I’ve always used macs and eagerly awaited the release of the iphone on the Orange network.
I’ve had mine now for couple of months and love it.
I love the design, as I do with all Apple products. It seamlessly syncs with my iMac and MacBook so my contacts and iCal are always up to date.The Maps App is also handy as I don’t have SatNav at the moment.
But, I am way too biased in favour of Macs so I don’t think it would be to every-bodies taste.
