• Ioline Plotters?

Posted by David-Foster- on April 13, 2004 at 9:14 pm

    Hi
Me again, still no plotter but imminent purchase! Was all set for a SummaCut D60 then a spanner in the works…. Ioline Smartrac IS 60. They are American and with the dollar conversion their UK site is doing it for £1,295 now. All the specs seem to add up, plus engraving option and other stuff.
Anyone any feedback on how good these plotters are? They offer 10 year warranty! (a catch)
    TIA
    Fozzie

    My honest opinion is..
If they say it is capable, then it probably is. 😕

    However,

I don’t know how it works exactly but ide imagine it not that great.
Engraving would put allot of stress on the carriage of the cutter, working it loose from time to time. This happens on most normal potters with excessive use over long months at a time, that’s when only cutting vinyl. A tighten of a screw or 2 and its back to normal. But engraving! Ide imagine far more wear and tear & faster.
Then there is what you can engrave?
It doesn’t seem to be a flat bed cutter so engraving any material it would have to be pretty flexible to run through a cutter. I personally don’t know of flexible materials for engraving. Normally we engrave plastics, wood, brass etc
We currently have 4 plotters and a router and i don’t think ide ever merge them in what they do.. Each machine to its own.
There is also the mess that comes with engraving. Were would that go?

I maybe unfair and knocking a good machine, so I wont go any further, as I don’t know enough.
I’m just curious of how this set-up works. That’s all.. 🙄

If you do buy one, please report back and let us know how you get on. I have heard of ioline cutters and haven’t heard of any problems that spring to mind.

hi Guys havent any recent knowledge of them but I did have a lend of one about 8 years ago and it was a really sturdy machine well engineered and worked really well no bells and whistles but a tidy machine. It also had a great holder that you could put any biro or felt pen in and it would draw and it was really easy to change. hope this helps

Would like to just back up what Rob’s said. Engraving (even small scale stuff) produces a lot more vibrations and stress on the machine than you might expect.

If it were me, and I was looking to go into engraving as well as cutting. I would probably buy a dedicated cutter and engraving machine as seperate units. Its kind of like DIY tools, those black and decker cordless gadgets that have an interchangable head to swop between a jigaw, screwdriver and torch, they’re OK but not as good as stand alone units.

    Just my two cents….

I have looked into it and I wouldn’t use the term engraver, more like “scratcher” lol. Nevertheless that is a secondary use.
The main advantage for my use is the “Multi-Tool Jaw” which can hold any drawing implement up to 1″ in diameter, say marker pen or pencil.
It’s an attractive price for what I believe to be a solidly built plotter.
I was just after some reassurance before I spent my dosh. Don’t want to end up wishing I’d have bought the SummaCut D60!
    Thanks
