Right guys, i need your help on this one.
I am currently printing on a rockhopper2 with onyx rip at the moment and we are thinking of buying a second printer. Because of the problems with the rockplopper we are looking for something different, something which will really make a difference. So any feedback would be much appreciated!!

    hi Chris
the probs we are having are mainly printing bitmap images. We are getting a lot of “burnt effect” around shaded areas, which we know will be the profile, due to maybe the colour curve that will need altering in the preflight to try and blend graduation from dark to light. Its more obvious when illuminated.
But thats just one of many problems.

    cheers

do you feel its just the rip letting you down others are available do you use a tft or crt screen on the computer – i have noticed that the later profiles for my soljet are aimed more at pop than photo reproduction and require reworking to lift the burnt areas but not got it right yet

    Marshy,

We have supplied a couple of Rockhopper 2’s to some of our clients, and whilst they are not our favourite printer, we have had pretty good results running from Onyx 6. The early profiles were a disaster though – Have you tried downloading the latest profiles from the Onyx website (www.onyxgfx.com) ? Mind you, even then they need a bit of tweaking.

Did you get one of the two heater early Rockhopper 2’s or have you got one of the later four heater versions ? – it makes a big difference in the machine; and are you running it 2×4 or 1×6 ? The units we installed went out as 1×6 and we have had pretty decent results. The Rockhopper 2 needs careful setting up to get the best out of it though. For such a brute of machine they seem to be quite sensitive.

If you want a recommendation on a machine it would be helpful if you told everyone the type of work you do – the quality, width and speed required etc.

I think you may still be able to get better out of your Rockhopper though. Burnt edges on bitmaps just shouldn’t be allowed in this day and age !

Sorry to hear your having troubles,

    Hi,
we’ve recently installed the Tiara Opal 2 and can’t praise it highly enough. The quality is STUNNING!!! And with ink around the £100 mark per litre on True Solvent it blows the Seiko colourpainter away on likely running costs. Durability from the Lyson inks passes the scratch with your nail test with no problem. It came with the Colourgate rip which runs a lot faster than any version of Postershop we have and is really easy to set up and use.
We bought ours through Kaytek, contact is Chris Bailey who is genuinely one of the nicest, non-bullshittintg guys your ever likely to meet. (particularly when it comes to spending money on digital printers!!!)
    His number is01704 897575.
    Regards,
    John.

what i think i would do mate is, forget having to buy a new machine.
why not invest on getting the profiles done professionaly first? let them solve your problem…
(thats if its a software/profile thing?)
richard from raccoon graphics also owns a company thats specialises in creating profiles & colour managment etc. i would think its got to be cheaper going that route than giving up on your machine.
i dont mean that in anyway bad, just that shelling out on a new machine is a bit extreme, “if” the current one can be tweaked to perfect?

im sorry but i cant remember the name of richards new company. but i am sure if you call raccoon graphics they can advise.
