Internal Notice Boards
Posted by Andrew McCreadie on July 2, 2007 at 8:55 amMorning all.
I am looking to construct some internal notice boards 5′ x 2′ which will be hung on a wall – they will always be indoors and must a have an aluminum frame, must be tackable i.e. different sheets of paper being replaced every so often and also must be suitable for vinyl lettering. which is why I cant just use normal boards!!
I was thinking of using 5mm foamex with an ali frame would this be suitable or can anyone else come up with a different material or any other ideas??
As usual many thanks in advance.

Andrew,
Snap frames, and use 1 or 2mm foamex for the inserts, although the frames usually come with a base and transparent fasciaI dont know this company, but the have a video that shows what I mean

Many Thanks Peter, do you think the 5mm is overkill ??

I’m not sure that I would use foam but if I did I would make sure it was a good quality glossy foam, I think the main problem with foam is keeping it clean, dirt seems to get ingrained in to far to easily.
I’m not sure I understand what you mean by not being able to use the normal boards though. I have applied vinyl graphics to the melamine type boards that most stationary suppliers sell loads of times without any problems and sometimes the prices these boards sell for it is difficult to make them yourself much if any cheaper. -
Hi Martin
Thanks for your reply, notice boards is different from what I usually do , so my knowledge on notice boards is limited, I presumed you cant tack anything onto the white dry notice boards that you see and also I presumed you couldn’t vinyl the cork based boards.
That’s is why I was thinking about the FoamexThanks Andy

Sorry Andy when you said must be tackable (is that a word :lol1:) I assumed you meant using something like blue-tac not pins. In that case the melamine boards wont work at all. Foam probably would be your best bet in that case and 1-2mm might be a bit thin if they are going to use pins. Can’t imagine it looking good for that long though, foamex being a plastic is going to show all the pin holes they make in it which will probably look quite bad after a while. I suppose it depends how often they intend to change what is pinned on it.

Heres a solution, I did this recently
Supply a Snapframe – with self adhesive loop nylon applied to the back board then supply the customer with velcro coins (hook) to apply one in each corner on the rear of the paper inserts and bingo on offable and re positionable!

Hi Martin
Sorry about my vocabulary but thats what they were keen being able to tack sheets on I explained they could get different alternatives such as blu tac , magnets etc but they were insisitent on tacks.
John thanks for input but as said they were def looking to tack sheets on, which then brings me back to the foamex as stated before which better quality glossy foam would you recommend.
always appreciate the input

you need to look at sundeala board, comes in different colours, we have screenprinted it in the past, not sure if it would take vinyl though.

try looking for a board called KAPA board it’s something like
dibond,ie. a sandwich but of a foam core(fine for pins etc.)
with a pvc looking outer skin which should take vinyl letteringF

Thanks Fred I will look into it, do you know any suppliers ?

Europoint have it on the link from the homepage!
Thought i saw it on there a few weeks ago ,
sorry should have pointed you there straight away (hot) -
Kapa boards are usually supplied in smaller sizes for screen printing and often in large packs. They rarely have a water proof face so can be difficult to apply vinyl too.
An alternative is Forex smart which has just been released in 5mm. This has a dense polystyrene core and face so is completely waterproof and is easy to work with. The front face may be too rigid to take pins easily though so you would need to get a sample from Europoint and try this.
Conventional fluted pvc (corex) takes a pin nicely and is a cheap alternative?

Hi Colin
Many thanks for you input, I will get samples of all suggested kapa , foamex, forex smart and corex.
Also sorry to be a pain but could some point me in the right direction for the Aluminum frame that is required for boards.
Thanks again

Hi Andy
SMP provide either the components or in kit form see here http://www.signmakersproducts.ltd.uk/
The problem with snap frames is I dont think many manufacturers are happy about a 5′ length so you may need something a little sturdier for that size. If you use any of the normal sign trims that hold the panel off the wall you will need to fit packing pieces to the back of the panel to stop it being pushed in when placing the pins.
