Did anyone else see this on the net?

Seems there’s not much that escapes the eyes of lawyers who deal in copyright infringements. Creo is the most recent addition to a list of 44 defendants who are being sued in the Texas courts by US company Compression Labs for infringing the patent on the industry standard JPEG compression file format. That’s right, the same jpeg format we all use every day to save a graphic file and store or send it over the Internet.
Compression Labs, a subsidiary of Forgent Networks, holds a US patent (No. 4698672) in which it claims it is the legal owner of the JPEG format.

The company says it is has been regarded as a leader in the image compression field for many years and insists that its research scientists created the format.

Many large international manufacturers, as well as some of the leading standards organisations, say that Compression Labs’ claim of ownership are unfounded but, according to a spokesman for the company, the patent was always on the public record and that the developers of the patent have been known as leaders in compression technology.

Should the company be successful in its claim it will mean the price of software using the jpeg technology will become more expensive, but many industry leaders say the claim is totally unfounded and will fail. One doesn’t envy the task at hand for Compression Labs when you see the list of defendants includes Adobe Systems, Apple Computer, Canon, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Panasonic, Agfa, Kodak and Xerox
