  • Insurance – Driving customers vehicles

    Hi all,

My van insurance is up for renewal this week and I’m wondering if there are
any cheaper options out there compared to what I currently have?

I have a motor trader policy which allows me to drive customers vehicles
covering me for road risk and storing vehicles at our premises. This policy also covers me on our own van – VW transporter.

My issue is I’m not a motor trader and currently I’m paying over a grand a year for this policy.

Plus – I also need to insure my 24yr old employee on the work van and hope to get all of this under one policy.

Can anyone please suggest a competitive insurer?

    Many Thanks Dan

We have insurance arranged through a broker that covers us for driving customers vehicles. The insurer is called Covea insurance PLC but not all brokers offer it so you may need to ask around a few different brokers to get a quote. They only deal with brokers so you can’t approach them direct for a quote.

    Hello there,

I have just had some quotes from a company who specialise in signage I met them at the Sign & Digital 2014 show.

They are called Sign Elite. They have policies specifically for us and the prices were pretty sound.

Not sure if you can put links but here goes signelite.co.uk

Make sure you know exactly what you are getting, some policy’s will only allow you to either store or drive the customers vehicle in & out of your workshop & don’t cover you for road use so you can’t collect & drop off as you can with a motor traders policy.

Yes the sign elite cover does all this, allows you to offer a pickup and drop off service etc….

What is needed is road risk cover not motor traders policy. The difference.:

-Motor trader policies allow you to drive a vehicle that is not otherwise insured

-Road risk cover allows you to drive a vehicle that is already insured, similar to a fully comp policy covering you to drive other vehicles "third part only" if they are ALREADY insured by the owner for example.

The real difference between road risk and a normal fully comp policy is that it is specifically wrote for business use and therefore protects you better. In addition to this it is wrote specifically for our industry.

Yes but does the drop off & pick up cover you fully comp or third party? Could you really afford to replace a brand new long wheelbase sprinter from your own pocket??

It’s ok being road legal but the cost of replacing a van could put you out of business.

That’s why I said to check what you are actually getting.

Try speaking to Christina Douris at APS. I know they do some sort vehicle insurance for the sign industry but I don’t really know much more than that to be honest.

Martin as said it is wrote SPECIFICALLY for our industry so yes is fully comp + EXTRAS just for our industry

It is not a half arsed policy like a lot of companies "make do" with. It covers you fully incl. legal cover etc…

That does not sound like the cover signelite offered me at a hideous rate plus it is linked to the total value of the vehicle and your covered agreed max amount.
It was such a minefield that we just won’t drive a customers vehicle on the road……

You have a pre-agreed vehicle value amount…this is the value of the most expensive vehicle you plan to drive/work on. I told them 30,000 which covers most brand new vans….however. All it takes is a phone call and they will up this temporarily. I phoned to get cover for a prestige/high performance car worth circa of 100,000 at its age and mileage. They agreed to do this and sent a temporary certificate for this FREE OF CHARGE.

The cover is the best for us when you go through all the in’s and outs. We have a 22 year old with 1 years no claims and an accident. They agreed to insure him and 2 other older drivers + myself for an all in price of £1350 fully comp.

How long ago did you get a quote?
