Installing posts through a solid surface
Posted by Warren Beard on March 30, 2011 at 6:32 pmHi All
I have only ever put in posts in to soil (albeit sometimes full of rocks), I have a request that is now going to go through either concrete or asphalt, how would I go about making these holes?
cheers
Warren

Kango, or propper name, breaker, can be hired from TP or jewsons etc. Break up surface with it and remove rubble gradually making hole, post in, fill with concrete, and the if it’s tarmac, you can buy bags of patch up tarmac from jewsons, TP etc, leave concrete down from top by about 3 inches, then fill with tarmac and smash down to flatten with the end of a bit of 4 x 2 or lump hammer.
Job done 😀

Oh yeah, careful of water pipes, electric, gas, drainage too

How tall are the posts?
and what thickness is the concrete?
you may be able to use a base plate, and rawl bolts instead of digging a holePeter

How would you find out the thickness of the concrete?

Warren, speak to the customer they might have an idea, Peters option with a base plate is far easier and far less time consuming than digging holes that may well be over kill for the job you are doing.

When digging through tarmac or concrete I always score a square first with an angle grinder them get out the breaker. Much neater finish. Depending on the position you can get away with just concrete flush to the surface. 😀

quote Martin:Dig a hole and measure it 😉
not as silly as it sounds, you can just drill one small diameter hole to find out how thick the concrete is….

pretty much whats been said, if in any doubt about services a cat scan gives you a good idea whats below ground, ive done a lot of these in the last year using quick set cement in the concrete so we can get the sign up in quick time and off site – Robs got a great demo on post mounting (grass though) pm me if you want any pics relating to concrete etc
