  • Installing optically clear window vinyl – tips

    Hi Guys,

I don’t install much optically clear vinyl, a couple of pointers would be great.

Regarding the water solution, I use a yello tools application fluid mixed with the water ( a bit like window cleaner to be honest) for fitting frosted film. Is this alright to use or any other recommendation?

With installing, I’v used a blue max squeegee and this seems to work, but I’m a bit unsure whether this will mark and scratch the ink. I don’t want to use app tape as I don’t want to go back and remove. I also don’t want to overlaminate as it will cost a bomb.

When printing, do you print a double pass to give better contrast to the image?

Any other tips would be great so I can be loaded with knowledge

    Cheers!

How big are the panels. Awful stuff to apply not laminated.

Make sure the glass is spotless clean.

    Good morning Simon
We do a lot of clear and optically clear vinyl installations. Solution we find the best, and cheapest is water with a few drips of Johnson Baby shampoo, gives it enough slip to re-position but doesn’t affect appearance once water is expelled.
A Blue Max or Orange Crush is absolutely fine for this, make sure you spray the front face with water to help it glide, this also minimises any scratching.
Single/double hit we find depends very much on clients personal preference – its trial and error. As already mentioned, glass needs to be squeaky clean as the film will magnify any foreign bodies/dirt/paint spots.
Generally, we use a standard window blade to get the water out quickly, then follow this up with a blue max.
Ultimately its personal preference, as im sure many on here will do it differently or use different solutions – find whats best for you

What’s a good brand of vinyl to use for this?
