    Hiya all

Just finished installing a large sign that Should have taken 3/4 hours two people.

3 People and 9 hours later the jobs done phew!!!

I will post some pictures when the building is complete.

    So heres how it went.

Firstly the shop was boarded up so close to the fascia we had to take it all down, then the scaffold that was there was to high so we lowered it. All starts going well then the scaff is now in the way. Then inside we go and the only thing to attach to is plasterboard so off we trot to get some plasterboard fixings, come back they wont work. Bolts not long enough, then we find out they double skined it.

Off we go again to get longer fixings. Then the sign inside it to bloody high for ladders. Scratching our heads to how we can get up there (now getting late) and the builder says he`s got an Ali tower out the back (why didnt he mention it 6 hours ago).

Finally the width of the sign is to big for the doors (it is supposed to be) but we cant get the bloody thing up there. Doors in the way and again the bloody scaffold. Back to the factory pick up another fitter in Friday rush hour come back and hooray we close the doors, squeeze through the gap and struggle getting it up.

Anyway its up, illuminated, client loves it and i am knackered. So i will have a lay in Sunday. No we are 16 metres up doing another job in the centrer of Guildford and it has to be Sunday`s. Great.

I remember someone asking what these “Lunch Break” things are. What are weekends???? Roll on Monday

Anyone else had these fun jobs that take forever???

how did you come about knowing your measurements mate..?
what i mean is. did the customer supply you with requirmenst and you arrived to fit as instructed.. if so you should be billing them for all this extra labour..
    (in my mind)
i have myself back in the car park shifting vans for the sales reps for nothing 😮

somthing i try and do “myself” now, is if i have a fascia or somthing like that to fit. “i” do the site visit.. i take a sketch of the area and mark in the sizes..
if there is a pipe near by i also take how far in it comes and what the diameter of it is… if its a fair size job. ill take a series of digital pictures.
when i get back to the work i have the size to go on and i print of rough copies on paper of the shop front.. i have to say it makes all the difference having the pictures. you know what your drilling into, so you know the fixings etc you need..
if its a wooden surface always test the wood. i dont know many jobs i turn up and the wood is all warped behind 24 skins of gloss paint… 😡

Wish it was as easy as that, i agree with all points because thats exactly what was done (photos, survey etc)

The probs were the place is a building site and they are trying to open this week. So we are working around the builders, sparkies, plumbers, decorators etc.

When i did the survey i spoke to the builders and asked what the ceilings were, joists etc. Since then they have changed things. The doors were not supposed to be in yet but they were. All the measurements we spot on apart from lifting the sign up. When i post the pictures you will see what i mean. We didnt want the scaff but the plasterers need it after us so they left it up. The sign is 1760 wide but 3 metres in length and goes through the entrance of the building like a canopy and up to the ceiling again. Its like a U shape with infilled illuminated logosand lit disks.

The original drawings were from an architect and yes they were all wrong thats why we measured it. We always check the site and charge for a detailed site survey. With regards charging for the extra labour i already costed in 8 hours 3 men. but when we designed the build of the sign it should have gone up quicker so we are still quids in. Now he wants more signage (probably about £3000 more, not costed it yet) and we got invites to the launch party. Its a trendy bar/bistro and FREE beer all night.

The main problems as said was the scaff and the doors in the way

Hope this makes sense but will post pictures soon and you`ll see what i mean a bit clearer. All said and done it was fun because there were lots of totty around.

    Hi Guys

Health and safety point under no circumstances should you have altered the scaffolding if it was put up buy a scaffold company. if it was put up by the site operators you should instruct them to move it. or they should arrange for a scaffold erector to move it. If one of your guys had an accident or a plasterer falls off say next week sometime you would most certainly have to carry the responsibility even if the site operators told you its ok.
