  • Ink Splash/Thick Lines?

Posted by Joseph Helm on May 17, 2009 at 12:11 pm

    Hi Everyone

On some of the medias we use.. We’ve been getting splashes/thick lines of ink at the sides of the media… some times it’s on the main print, which pretty much writes the print off.

(mods, please upload to the site if there’s a problem with the image hosting)

Any ideas on how to stop it?

We have a 56" solvent ink Mutoh 8265

I’d rather try and resolve it myself, than call Xerox out to look.

    Thanks

    Joseph

Joseph,it looks like the media is curling up at the edges,
    not good for your heads,
Heater settings may be causing the curl, but also humidity can have an effect.

    Thanks for your reply

I was thinking about that, and the edges do curl a bit.

But the heads are too high for it to hit… I’ve also set the heads at the highest they go, and we still get it. (as does turning the heat down)

The media is pretty much like banner media.

But we don’t get this issue on the banner media..

you could try slowing the head scan speed, sometimes the head carriage will suck the material up as it passes too fast. Does this material have frayed fibers at the edge etc

On one side it has a bit, but not enough to cause a problem.
The other is nice and clean.

I’ll have a look in the RIP and see if there’s a way to slow the head down.

    Thanks

hmm.. on a jv3 we have media guides each side to stop any lifting….
i think this is as said touching the head, but one thing we get is a let of muck under the head, this is due to carpet dust getting stuck under the head but since we moved the printer we don’t get that as much.

There’s a vacuum on this one that does a good job of keeping the media down.

There’s no stuff on the heads.. I spent hours yesterday cleaning them, replaced the wipers and some other things.

I’ll give xerox a ring tomorrow and see what they got to say about it.
We’re paying them a crazy amount each month, for support… may as well use it 🙁

I think I have an idea of whats doing it… but I’ll have see what xerox thinks.

    Thanks for the help everyone!

had similar and one of the pumps was not working. move heads away from caps and see if one cap is wetter than the others.
or manually operate the pumps to see if its sucking the excess ink away.

but as its only happening on this material and you are sure that there is no bits of fluff then possibly static.

    No fluff on there…

I think it’s down to the heater and feed.

The heater at the front is holding the media with the heat, and as the back feeds in.. the media goes up, high enough to hit the heads as the print head is going off one of the sides of the media.

Then the front drops down, and it just does the same again on the next run.
I tried turning the heat down, but the ink didn’t dry enough, before it starting going on the roll.

I’m going to find out from Xerox tomorrow if there’s a way to make sure the head is well out the way before the feed moves the media.

    Thanks

try turning down the vacuum a bit sometimes to much vac can cause the media to lift up as it feeds. I print on a media that unless i unroll it manually it will ruck up as it feeds.
