ink dry problem
Posted by Paul.Gardner on June 24, 2010 at 6:58 amI am getting lot of problems with ink sticking etc with anything over about 1.2 meters, am having to make sure the print does not come int contact with anything or it just gets wasted.
Using versacamm, metamark md5 & metamark profile have had to do some 2.4 meter printed vinyls and it has been a bit of a nightmare nursing them through the printer.

Take up spooler (£300ish for a 3rd party one) or a huge bench to spool out on to (what I do).
Or babysit it & roll it up as it comes off…

Not sure what you mean here but normal issues are caused by the print touching another printed area or even sometimes the unprinted area. Try not to let the media touch until you are 100% certain it is dry.I would strongly advise a take up roll. We managed long enough without one but now wonder how we ever did.
Cheers

Hi Paul, Not sure what you’re trying to say but it sounds like the print is not getting dry. check the heaters settings you’re using? some media need more heat then others, also depends on ink passes.

Thanks for the suggestions, the problem is the print is not dry and unless i am there to watch it does not come into contact with anything, it gets ruined.
Re: takeup roller, i did not think one would help as the print will come into contact as it rolls, or am i getting it wrong ?

It rolls itself back up – the print won’t stick to the backing of vinyl – there have been thousands of these sold worldwide to do the job it was designed for…banner on the other hand…it sticks a bit but I’ve not seen it damage the print the same way as PRINT-TO-PRINT will.

David thanks, i thought the problem was contact with anything untill properly dry. Will get a roller. Am i right in thinking that i will have to print & then cut later if i use a takeup roller ?

Try using a fan to blow off the print, sounds like your over inking if you cant roll it up with out sticking to the backing but if you don’t have a take-up you will have to roll it constantly, would also be worth looking at profiling as well or slowing it down.

Hi Paul
I had this problem at the beginning of my carrier with plotter. And if I understood correctly you are using Roland Versacamm to print?
Here is how I learned to avoid this problem:
– always print with turned on heaters (35/45 degrees or sometimes 40/50 degrees)
– you are not using proper media profile because your plotter is putting too much ink on vinyl (I can advise you on Roland VersaCamm profiles which to use)
– I bought additional rolling system with additional blowers for longer prints
– don’t leave long print to print without your presence
– roll to paper side so that print side touches back paper side
– for materials which takes longer to absorb ink you must have enough space in front of plotter so you can stretch it flatLeave prints to dry at least for a day before putting it back for cutting.
But I think that you are using wrong media profile…
